An hourglass that blinks about every three seconds has appeared next to my cursor when I am in Outlook Express, but only in Outlook Express. I have followed all 5 steps of MajorGeeks procedures except using Bitdefender because Bitdefender was requiring 65 hours to scan. The hourglass is still present next to the cursor in Outlook Express.

OK, I ran CCleaner, then Spy Sweeper and am attaching the log for Spy Sweeper and HJT to this post. In the meantime my wife's computer, which is on a Local Area Network in my house, has contracted the blinking hourglass syndrome too in her Outlook Express. Many thanks for your help! Chris

    Please download CounterSpy 1.5.77.

Install, when the setup wizard comes up just click "Skip" and then it will update. After all updates are completed click CLOSE.

Click on "Run Spyware Scan" and then click on Scan Options, be sure "Full System" is checked. After you completed the steps above, click "Scan Now" to begin the scan.

Afterwards please attach the log along with a fresh HJT log.

Please look in Add or Remove Programs for the following and Uninstall them if found:

    Ewido

    Spy Sweeper

    CounterSpy

Now scan with HijackThis and Check the Boxes for the following:

Make sure All Browser Windows are Closed when you Click FIX.

Again, make sure All Browser Windows are Closed when you Click FIX.

    NEXT:
Run CCleaner to clean up cookies and temp files.

Run full scans with Ad-Aware SE & Spybot S&D and have both programs fix what they find.
Note: Remember to get all updates before doing the scans.

Then, as an added precaution, Go to Start > Run and type: cleanmgr and then click OK. Make sure the boxes for these are checked:
    Temporary Files
    Temporary Internet Files
    Recycle Bin

    And Click OK.

After you complete the above, reboot and let me know how things are running.

Did all of the above, and the blinking hourglass is still there. It appear ONLY in Outlook Express. Could I delete Outlook Express and reload it from Microsoft? Would that do any good? I've scrubbed this computer pretty well with all the spyware suggestions that have been made so far.

I had a blinking hourglass that no amount of spy software could remove. I finally figured out the virus must be in my Outlook Express. I deleted Outlook Express using the procedure in XP Home, and then reintstalled Outlook Express. The blinking hourglass is gone! Chris
