MSE is continually detecting a win32/brontok.bm@mm and saying it is removed only to have it pop up elsewhere on my system. It seems to be spreading quickly.

I have gone through the steps asked in the stickied posts but was unable to do the msconfig step at first though now I am able to get to it and it is set correctly.

In attempting to get my SAS log I have now found SAS to be inoperable.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You need to move ComboFix.exe to your Desktop as specified. You currently have it in the below location:
    c:\documents and settings\Compaq_Owner\My Documents\Downloads\ComboFix.exe

I strongly advise you to cleanup your Desktop. Remove eveything but links to run programs. Do not download and save programs here and defintely do not use it for long term storage. You need to keep ComboFix.exe here for now as we need it, but we will be removing it when we are finished with your cleanup. A cluttered Desktop is malware's playground and it can also cause performance degradation especially when you start saving large files here like you are doing.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://ct.download.com/clicks?t=16573693-ef460317b0ad981a5e16277ac31c9ab3-bf&s=5&fs=0
    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up because you recieve the following error: Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.

Now run this >> Using ESET's Online Scanner and attach the log from ESET

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • the log from ESET
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Ok, All three scans done. This thing had taken hold even worse than I thought. Is there anyway to know a timeframe of when it was downloaded? Im curious because i just recently connected this computer to the internet for the first time in over a year and it was getting little if any use. Also in the little Ive read about the brontok worm it seems it can spread through the network. I have a laptop also connected but a preliminary scan using SAS was clean. Is there any cause for concern?

As far as the performance goes its really hard for me to tell as the computer hadn't been in use prior to the past week. Surprisingly I wasn't really having any issues other than the repeated alerts from MSE. Which have yet to occur since the scans.

The Log files for eset and combofix were too large so I split and labeled them. I will place the mglogs in a seperate reply.

Okay that found a lot of problems. Since so much was found, there is a high risk that more still exists. Thus I want to run a couple more scans with ESET, but FIRST, I want to uninstall ComboFix to remove the infected items quarantined by ComboFix. Otherwise, ESET will just be complaining about them. Therefore do the below:
    • Uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required

      • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
      • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
Now I recommend that you run two more full scans with ESET with a reboot inbetween each one. Then attach the two new logs from these new scans. Hopefully they come up clean each time.

wow totally missed the combofix part as I viewed the post on my phone. I ran two more eset scans with the first of the two coming up empty but the second detecting more items. The second eset scan is attached. Should I uninstall combofix and rerun the scans?

Yes uninstall ComboFix and then keep running ESET until it comes up clean. If it does not come up clean within 3 to 5 runs, it may never come up clean which could mean a reinstall would be needed to fix.

It came up clean on the 5th and 6th scans. MSE hasnt detected anything since. Ive attached the log from the 4th scan which detected a trojan as well as a remaining brontok file. Any more steps I should take?

Complete all of the below instructions and then see how things look after a few days to make sure nothing returns. You can skip the uninstall ComboFix step since we already did this.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
