Cannot Download and open hjt program!

Hi! i have Windows Me with IE. Anyway i try to download and open hjt and it says it cannot open. I have tried it by unzipping it and i also have tried it by just opening the exe file from a website. Neither works. Please help.

Hi zakksangyl!

I see you had another thread with a similar issue some time ago that you didn't follow up on. bjgarrick replied to you in that thread with very specific instructions that are necessary not only for us to provide you with support, but for you to be able to get to the point where you can use hijack this.

HijackThis is a final step, not a first step. It is a tool that may identify certain malware and it in no way identifies all malware that can be lurking on your computer.

- Please run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates. If you are having difficulty with downloads do the online scans, then download SpyBot, HijackThis, etc.

Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)

• Bitdefender
• Panda Scan
• HijackThis

Sorry. I haven't posted yet, but i was out of town the last couple of days also i have dial-up, so it will take me awhile to download and run the programs i need to. Talk to you soon.

I've run into a couple of problems. First i was able to download Counterspy, but was not able to run a scan. Second, i kept trying to run bitdefender, but it would not update. So, i finally ran a scan anyway. Is there anything i can do to make them work?

Since you are having problems with CounterSpy and Bitdefender, you may also run into problems with PandaActiveScan. Also since you are on dialup, it will be faster if you just replace CounterSpy, BitDefender, and Panda with the below procedure (first uninstall CounterSpy since you cannot run it).

Run this Running Ewido Anti-Malware and then complete the rest of the READ & RUN ME and attach the Ewido log and you HijackThis log from step 7.

Hi, thanks for the info. and you were right about panda activescan. I downloaded ewido, but can't install it becaose i only have windows ME and it says you need windows 2000 or above. Anything else i can try?

Yes give the below a try instead. Follow the procedure and save the spysweeper.txt log. Post it along with your HJT log.

Running Spy Sweeper

hjt log and spysweeper results!

I have run all the read and run steps i could. My hijackthis log is attached. When i downloaded and ran spy sweeper, it would not let me get a log. so i wrote all of it down. I don't know how to get rid of the stuff, though.

The instructions for obtaining a log are in the procedure. Did Spy Sweeper fix what it found? Did you download Spy Sweeper from the link given in the procedure? Did you update it to current definitions after installing?

Your HJT log does not show any real malware. So if SpySweeper fixed what it found, I would assume you are okay now. Your initial complaint was that you could not open HJT but it looks like you just had some cockpit problems in getting started. Since you now have run HJT that problem is resolved. You can have HJT fix the below two minor items:

I tried to use the link you had, but it opened and said page not found. So i went elsewhere to download spysweeper and i updated it. It said i could not get a report unless i bought the program. Do you know of any other spyware operation that i can use to locate the adaware i posted?

Sorry, yeah hjt is working now. Spy sweeper would not let me fix the problems it found. So my original question has been resolved. Now my computer is running a little slower and locking up.

Uninstall SpySweeper since it is only a demo and cannot remove anything. This will speed things up.

Also you should delete the below if found:

I tried the link you gave me. It let me download and update spy sweeper, but wouldn't let me get a log still. It said i needed a subscription to it. Also this time said i had all the thing i reported earlier plus 3 Trojan viruses. So now what?

Did you do what I requested in message # 13? If not, please do it now.

I changed a link in the Spy Sweeper procedure (the one you previously tried). This download link hopefully has a trial version that will actually uninstall something. Uninstall what you have, reboot (don't skip this step), and then try running the procedure below.

Malware seems to be fine. My computer is still locking up though. Having trouble dialing up. Not sure if it's my company or me. Thanks again for all your help.

You're welcome. You will have to work that with either your ISP or try the Software or maybe Hardware Forum. But explain the problem in greater detail and also tell them you already worked thru the Malware Forum.
