Can't open .exe files

AVG removed a virus it seems, but something must have gone wrong because now whenever I click on an .exe it asks me to 'choose a program to open this file' and I have to find where the original file is in my computer.

I'm a computer newb so please help. I have windows XP, was able to acess firefox by finding the file when prompted to open a program to run the file.

Here are a few problem solvers for your symptoms:

1. http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm - scroll down to the "EXE File Association Fix", and follow the directions given on the page.

2. http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/exefix.reg - the same directions apply.

3. http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_file_and_folder_diag/ - run the Fix it listed.

 

There is a standard fix for exe's not working but in your case it sounds like shortcut files may be the problem.

Try right-clicking one of the files that doesn't work and selecting Properties. Do you see any mention of Shortcut or Target?

I'm running Windows 7 and my laptop is a mess. I cannot open .exe files to download software. I tried running the three problem solvers above but none would open because of "runtime errors" Also there seems to be a problem with the Windows Registry. I'm having issues with anything Windows related - Windows updates won't install, I can't use Windows Live Photo Gallery because it says I don't have the necessary permission to access the file location etc. Any help would be appreciated. I'm not a complete computer novice but am lost here.
