Another Forum (CNET) recommended I do a HiJack scan and post it to this forum to help be detect a process that might be blocking me from running a 16-bit program on my XP-3 OS.

Your help will be appreciated. The log is below

    Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1
Scan saved at 23:08:59, on 12/13/2008
Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
    MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16762)

Please begin by clicking Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > View > Show Hidden Devices.
    • Scroll down to “Non-plug and Play Drivers” and click the plus icon to open those drivers.
    • Then search forTDSSserv.sys
    • Let me know if you find this or not.
    • If you do find it, right click on it, and select Disable. Do not try to uninstall it.
    • Also if TDSSserv.sys is found and you disable it, then reboot.
    • After reboot continue on with the below cleaning instructions.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    Notes:
    1. If you run into problems trying to run theREAD & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

I have followed what I thought were your instructions:

1..I went to the Device Manager and looked for TDSSserv.sys and it wasn't/isn't there.

2..I booted in the Safe Mode and tried to run that problem 'exe' program and I got the same discouraging results.

    3. I ran the Malware Removal program and had one nothing to remove.

I couldn't/can't tell from the myriad of instructions what to do next. In some of the instructions, it asks not to run/post the Hijack Log, yet in other ist refers to that log.

I posted a HiJack log earlier after I had done most of what was instructed anyway (I didn't run the program in Safe Mode before, but I did a virus check and Malware Removal Run).

The program runs fine from a flash drive, but not from a folder/directory on the HD.

You need to follow the instructions give already. Those instructions tell you exactly which logs (there are 4 of them) you need to attach when you finish running the procedure. The below is a direct quote from the procedure.
If you want help, finish the instructions and attach the requested logs.
