    Hi,
I need help getting rid of the claro search engine and anything else it could have affected! It started yesterday after I installed Windows Live Messenger on my computer :(

I've tried following other threads but I don't think I have the computer knowledge to do this myself.

    Thank you in advance!

Welcome to the Malware Removal Forum.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

I have worked through the steps in the Malware removal guide, fixing google redirection/hacking problems guide and Windows 7 malware removal/cleaning procedures guide.

The claro search engine is hasn't gone away. I will attach the log files to this post and another post

The mbam log file is here. I am having trouble locating the MGtools log file. I am pretty sure the scan worked fine as the final screen was identical to the example shot provided in the guide. When I go to C drive > MGtools there is a zip.exe but no zipped file.

The claro search engine started yesterday after I installed windows live messenger

You can re run Hitman and have it delete all it finds. Then rescan and show me the new log.

http://imageshack.us/a/img841/7292/thisisujrt.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.

With MGlogs.zip, it is NOT inside of the MGTools folder. It should be right on C:\

Did you not delete what Hitman found then? Do so again, THEN rescan and show me latest log so I can see it's clear.

I don't think I completely understand what you mean.
I scanned with Hitman and then I clicked on "remove threats" or similar - I thought that deletes what Hitman found. Is there some other way to do it? I saved the log after hitman finished removing threats.

Just rescan with Hitman (just a scan) and then attach the very newest log please.

As I suspected... all the junk still there as you can see. Please re run HitmanPro and let it DELETE that stuff! Then...rescan again, and show me the latest log so I can see it is clean this time.

Finally understood what you meant. I have done as asked and attached the log.
Not sure what to do next - the Claro search engine is still there when I open up google.
Thanks for your help so far

    • Re run RogueKiller then, just a scan and attach log.
    • Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Download OTL to your desktop.

    • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
    • Vista and Windows 7 users Right-click OTL and choose Run as Administrator)
    • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
    • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
    • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

Attach both of these logs into your next reply.

We need to run an OTL Fix

    • Right-click OTL.exe And select " Run as administrator " to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it.
    • Copy and Paste the following code into the textbox. Do not include the word Code

    Code:
    :otl
    IE:[b]64bit:[/b] - HKLM\..\SearchScopes\{2fa28606-de77-4029-af96-b231e3b8f827}: "URL" = http://eu.ask.com/web?q={searchterms}&l=dis&o=HPNTDF

The first log is after doing the fix. I wasn't sure what you meant by "click image" though.

The second log is after a scan.

When I open up google chrome I get the claro search engine page rather than google.com or the apps page. I can still click on the home button on chrome to go to google or the new tab button to get the apps page. I am not sure why claro appears or if it is a problem anymore.

Uninstall Google Chrome using Revo Uninstaller. Then reinstall and let me know if the problem persists.

    Most welcome. :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 4 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
