Combofix and no internet/network connection

After being hit with some nasty infection that disabled my security centre, i managed to get that back up and running after scouring the net and replaced some registry keys.

Although that helped re-enable my anti-virus and firewall, I run constant quick scans via Trend Titanium and hitman pro which detects a number of threats which i promptly delete.

Convinced im still infected, I made the mistake of running combofix. I let it do its thing only to have my internet connection completely gone. I am no longer connected to my small home network.

Luckily I have additional machines with net access to allow searches, but so far no method ive come across has yielded any results. I would very much like my internet access/network restored as well as having removed/knowing this infection is behind me.

Thanks in advance for any assistance provided.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:
    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

I have completed the Malware Removal Guide and attached my logs below. All scans came back clean.

Problem of the network unable to detect my home network ("unidentified network") and connect to the internet remain however.

    Not true.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://search.babylon.com/?AF=100888&babsrc=HP_ss&mntrId=581103b8000000000000485b39f3de8a
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up because you recieve the following error: Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Combofix is complete. While Ill admit, my system seems less "clunkier" then before, the network/internet connection issue is still there.

Be patient while doing the below. The fixes can take quite awhile to run. Especially the permissions repairs. It may be best to kick it off and goto bed or do something else. It is better not to run anything while the repairs are going on.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Per your logs, you do not have DHCP enabled. Thus you are not even getting an IP address. You need to go into your network connections Properties and enable DHCP. See the below:

    http://windows7themes.net/how-to-enable-dhcp-in-windows-7.html

Also make sure that your router is working and also set for DHCP.

If the above do not help, then your network card ( Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller ) may be broken. You could try uninstalling it from Device Manager and then rebooting. It should auto detect upon reboot and reinstall as long as the drivers are still present on your PC.

Also note: Too bad you removed all of your restore points. You could have used one to fix this.

My Local Area Connection is set to auto configure for both. Even tried the uninstall method, which the computer auto-detected and installed, but the IP preferred is some 169.254.136.58, when it should be a 192.168.1.1

Even tried to manually set an IP, which makes the computer pick up a network, but has no internet access.

Per your last logs it was not. They showed
    Code:
    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
       Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected
       Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
       Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller
    [B][COLOR=red]   DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
    [/COLOR][/B] Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
So are you saying you made no change?

This is typical of what you would get when DHCP is not enabled.

I followed the DHCP link you provided and switched the IP address from a static address then switched it back to automatic.

I've uninstalled the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller from the device manager, which it reinstalled itself on reboot.

Checking my Local Area Connection TCP/IPv4 again, all settings were already set to auto but no local network besides the "unidentified network" was detected.

My ipconfig /all from cmd still labels the DHCP Enabled as No.

There are only two methods we have seen thus far to actually fix this type of problem:
    1. Using System Restore to go back to a point before the problem began. If the Sept 8, 2012 restore point you have was from before the loss of internet then give it a try, but based on you first posting here on 9/7, I would assume that the 9/8 restore point is from after the infection. Why did you remove restore points?
    2. Reinstall.

Almost forgot to ask, do you have your Windows XP Boot CD? We may be able to do something from the Recovery Console. Depends on if some backup files exist for a restore. The below new MGtools will check to see if these files exist.

Please also download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista or Win7, make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

My current OS is Win 7, so the only CD i have is the Windows 7 Home premium installation DVD amongst the other motherboard/video card related installation CDs.

Have you tried running System Restore to see what restore points actually exist?

From your logs, I did not see anything old enough to use. If there are no restore points from before the time you ran ComboFix ( and Combofix does create a restore point when run ), then the only option I know of that may fix this is a reinstall.

None of the systems restores that are available are old enough :(

As for reinstall, if you're talking a re installation of windows 7, it comes back stating my current version is newer then the CD version. Is there anyway to bypass this?

I've managed to reinstall windows, which returned internet and network access almost instantly. Now I am undertaking the slow road to reinstalling/updating my system.

Thank you for your time and patience in aiding me in restoring my PC, much appreciated. :)

You're welcom. Happy to hear you have gotten it working again.
Yes this can be a lot of work getting things back to where they were.
