I understand I shouldn't have run Combofix without instruction from an expert but I hope you can still help.

I had a problem with a bit of malware that kept installing a toolbar and redirecting my searches.

I ran malware bytes but it came back within 2 restarts.

Combofix ran overnight but it has deleted my entire C:\user folder.

I can see some old posts from 2010 about this bug but nothing recent. The userpreference restore .exe "CFDQ-UsrPrf.exe" gives an error when it runs.

I can see all the files in the QooBox folder but there is 19,684 files that need restoring and they all have .var suffixes.

How can I restore all these files. This is all my pictures, documents and music!!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Yes you are correct. You should not have run ComboFix on your own.

You can give the below a try but without have seen how ComboFix had been run I'm not sure what the results may be.

We need to use ComboFix to DeQuarantine the files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named C:\DeQuarantine_log.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\DeQuarantine_log.txt
You may have to compress it into a ZIP file to attach it since you had a lot of files deleted.

Thanks. All files have been restored and I don't appear to now have any malware problems.

However Google Chrome would not load. I figured I would delete and reinstall.

Uninstalled without a problem . Using IE to download the latest version and it just won't download.

I can get to www.google.co.uk/chrome and it loads the header but no buttons to download.

normal web browsing seems OK though.

Tried Firefox and the same thing happens.

    Excellent news! You're welcome.

Are you able to download anything at all from anywhere? Not sure this is a malware problem or not. The best way for us know for sure is for you to run the below procedures.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual update Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only RogueKiller and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run the rest of the READ & RUN ME FIRST instructions on the infected account.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Thanks for the help - All problems are resolved. I think the download problem was due to a corrupt version of Mcafee. After uninstalling, downloads resumed as normal and I managed to reinstall chrome and AVG.

Ran all the scanners mentioned in your link as well as the AVG scanner all came back clean.

System is much better now and runs very well.

I think the problem was caused by iLivid. it appears to be bundled with spyware, toolbars and browser hijackers.

You're welcome. Yes iLivid is junk that we always remove as part of our cleaning process.
