Computer completley irresponsive.

So basically, I just turned on my laptop today for the first time.
Last night it was running fine, and I had no problems. However, on my startup today EVERYTHING was not responding. I first noticed when my skype wouldn't work, then my Firefox, and even windows explorer crashed. After several reboots I realized it was going to persist. After some research on a different device, I came up pretty dry on info. So, I booted up safe mode with networking and at least this works. Any help would be appreciated. I am running a HP G42 with windows 7. Thanks in advance.
