Computer flips, AVG found Java/Byteverify

Hi,
Last night my father opened an email with a program in it. After he started the program there was nothing but trouble. First when I opened two browsers my computer crashed. But today when I only start the computer it most of the times chrash.
When I did an AVG scan in safe modus, I got an virus message of Java/Byteverify. The files were deleted but my computer is still acting crazy. Was Java/Byteverify the virus from the email or was it something completely different and are the files from the email still on my computer??
My computer system:
Pentium IV, Windows XP, Windows XP-service pack 2, AVG virusscan, Ad-aware. If you want more information just ask please.

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

- Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis:
