    Hi
    I'm posting for my partner as he says he won't understand the replies :)

    His PC has picked up a virus that AVG didn't manage to block but did then flag up after it downloaded. It's a trojan called cyrpt.aqwl and it seems to be multiplying into a load of different things and AVG is now picking it up in system32 files, drivers - it's all over the place with scans starting up and windows opening 6 or so at a time. Apart from showing up in the scans, so far the only kind of action it seems to be taking is causing internet search re-directs as in when he's gone online to look for fixes and clicks on a Google search result it takes him to an ebay page even though that wasn't the link.

    We are afraid to even back up the files and format the hard drive to clear everything and start again as we don't know if this could have got into docs, music, pics or anything and we could end up just reloading it back onto the PC afterwards. :cry Can anyone help pleeeeze ? Thanks in advance, JulesM

    I want you to run TDSSKiller so refer to the below for how to do so.

    TDSSkiller - How to run

    Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.

    Now do not stop, continue on with the below instructions.

    Kestrel13 - thanks so much for that. All instructions now been carried out and I'm attaching the logs. Not sure how many attachments I can upload at one time so my reply will be a couple of posts !

    Really appreciate this help.

    You need to attach the whole C:\MGlogs.zip not individual files from within it. ;)

    Before we continue I would like for you to use MSConfig to put this machine back into normal start up mode

    Java(TM) 6 Update 29
    <--- Uninstall outdated Java.

    Now we need to use ComboFix by sUBs

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    DirLook::
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\529C5357000170D300038D00D151FC4E

    Firefox::
    FF - ProfilePath - c:\documents and settings\Nigel\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xow1yjzu.default\
    FF - prefs.js: keyword.URL - hxxp://dts.search-results.com/sr?src=ffb&appid=151111&systemid=426&sr=0&q=

    Reigstry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{9BB47C17-9C68-4BB3-B188-DD9AF0FD2406}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{9BB47C17-9C68-4BB3-B188-DD9AF0FD2426}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{9BB47C17-9C68-4BB3-B188-DD9AF0FD2406}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{9BB47C17-9C68-4BB3-B188-DD9AF0FD2426}]
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

    Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    Hi again,

    Logs are attached having following all instructions. Before that I went to msconfig and reset the PC to start up in Normal mode - I didn't know he had been messing about with this so he was told off accordingly !! :-D

    I followed instructions you posted but from the email and not by logging on to the site and the part about installing the up to date Java 6 wasn't there for some reason. So I uninstalled the out of date version as recommended but haven't reinstalled the latest but presume it doesn't make any difference to results - hope not.

    I didn't have any problems doing any of this, nor did Combofix cause any programmes not to re-open etc - all seemed to go as it should. No sign of "bad behaviour" today except when I ran a Malwarebytes scan this morning and AVG popped up saying it had found "crypt" again. Malwarebytes doesn't see it but AVG does when another programme is scanning - weird.

    Thanks again for all the help you're giving.

    You need to give me the exact file and file path of what avg is finding.

    File path is (copied in total including all quote marks etc) :

    "";"C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\serial.sys";"Virus found Cryptic";"Healable object that is white-listed (critical/system file that should not be removed)"

    That last part makes me wonder if AVG has been picking up something it shouldn't. But the coincidence of other people naming this virus and saying they were suffering browser pop-ups and redirects, which we have plus the PC crashing at random, suggests there is something here which doesn't belong.

    Thanks again and regards

    Hi again,

    That was quicker than expected but here goes:

    SystemLook 30.07.11 by jpshortstuff
    Log created at 19:51 on 16/04/2012 by Nigel
    Administrator - Elevation successful

    ========== filefind ==========

    Searching for "serial.sys"
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\serial.sys --a---- 64512 bytes [12:00 14/04/2008] [12:00 14/04/2008] 96C06F7D34AC189C67B9592213BCC865

    -= EOF =-

    At the end, an AVG alert box came up saying suspected trojan again but I think it was probably to do with this Systemlook. But it was called serial.BBBBH just in case that means anything sinister.
    Thanks

    Is avg still complaining about serial.sys?
