    Hi there -
Thank you so much in advance for your assistance!
I'm pretty computer savvy and have had no trouble in the past with fixing friend/families computers. Recently a friend gave me their computer and I have had no luck getting it cleaned! I used this site often and I appreciate all the help you guys provide. I went through the READ & RUN ME FIRST thread and I believe I'm ready for assistance!

I'm attaching the requested files however I'm unable to do Combofix or RootRepeal as this is a 64bit OS. I'll be anxiously awaiting your expertise!

I am not seeing any malware in your logs. Perhaps we should have you run an online scan:

    eSet Online Scan.

I'm gonna do the online scan now. Thanks.

Just an FYI... when I click on the link to the online scanner... I'm redirected to

    http://stopwebsitespam.com/block.php?url=http://www.eset.com/online-scanner

This is just one of the annoying symptoms that this computer is having. It will rarely open a web page the first time b/c of this redirect. After being persistent, I have finally gotten to the online scanner. I'll try running it now.

Once you finish with the online scan, then:

Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!

Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.4.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.

    • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
    • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
    • To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
    • Click the Start Scan button.
    • Do not use the computer during the scan
    • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
    • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
    • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
    • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_14.17.05_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory ( usually Local Disk C ).
    • Attach this log to your next message

I ran the online scanner and there were no threats found! I'll go ahead do the instructions for TDSSKiller. Thanks.

Let's see if it did clean the MBR:

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...

    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:

    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message.

    How rude of it!!

Download and create this disc> Vista and Win7 Recovery disc

You will need to change the boot order in the bios to make the cd-rom the first boot device.

To run the Bootrec.exe tool, you must start Windows RE. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Put the Windows 7 Recovery disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
    2. Press a key when you are prompted.
    3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.
    4. Click Repair your computer.
    5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
    6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
    7. Type Bootrec.exe /fixmbr, and then press ENTER. ( There is a space after the .exe and the / ).

Reboot to normal mode and re-run MBRCheck and attach the new log.

I have followed your instructions and used the recover disc to fixmbr and then reran MBRChecker. The first time that I ran it I forgot to right click and run as administrator so I ran it a second time to be sure. I've attached both of the logs. From what I can tell those came back good this time.

Yes, it is showing that the MBR is fixed. What issues are you still having, if any?

None that I notice. Do you have any suggestions on tests that I can run or anything specific I can do to double check and make sure everythings clean? The reason I ask is b/c this is a friends computer and I'll be giving it back to him when I believe that we're all good.

Thank you so much for you help. Its greatly appreciated. This site has always been great to me!

One of the main symptoms would be web site misdirections. If all your browsing gets you to the sites that you click on, then you are good. If you are uncertain about this system, just run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

and I will double check the logs. But I think you are good to go.

Here is the latest log! Thanks again Tim! Greatly appreciated.

This may be slightly off topic but I have another computer that belongs to my cousin. I usually have no problems fixing computers that boot up, but I have his computer and it seems to boot up fine but nothing appears on the screen :( If its something you think you could help with I can create another thread... if not, no worries... Thank you so much!

Logs are good. I will give you the final clean up in a sec.

The other computer ...... you probably need to post about that one in the software forum. We really can't do anything in the way of malware removal if you cant get it to boot properly. Have you tried CTRL + Alt +Del to see if you can bring up task manager?

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
