Desktop Hang When Deleting

When I delete something from the desktop I get a hang with the window telling me how long I have left, 0 secs, but it will not come off the screen.

I discovered a fix but found I need to install SP1 first, which I thought I had ages ago. It is not in my update queue so I DL it from Microsoft. When I attempt to install it, it tells me it is already running. When I right click My Computer I do not see it under windows edition. Also when I delete or even edit a document on my desktop or My Docs, it will freeze the small pane underneath the file with the name. This also means that whilst I can shut my computer down and move around the hard drives without issue, all the icons on my desktop become unusable. At times the mouse arrow becomes the timer but this flickers and does not change itself back to normal.

I have run Hijackthis in Safe Mode and have attached the log.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Are you aware of this entry in your host file?

Malware may not be the cause but to rul it out I will need to see more than a log from HJT ran in safe mode. You will have to complete as much as you can of our procedures in normal mode.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Thanks for the reply.

I think I've put this in the wrong section as I'm sure that I don't have an infection. The two scans I've done with Superanti and Malware have not shown anything at all. I don't have any other issues apart from the ones I've described in the original post and it all seems to resolve around the deletion of files or the editing of their names.

There was a Microsoft hotfix 931770 for this but it tells me I need Service Pack 2. I try to install that, tells me I don't even have 1 (which I'm sure I had but when I check, its seems I don't), I try to install that and I can't, I right click and run as admin but the timer just hangs for ages. Then it asks for permission, I say ok but then nothing further happens.

I can DL files ok, use the internet fine, the PC operates perfectly in every other way.

I'm aware of Warez-bb as I use it frequently to download AVI/WMV files. Whenever I extract from a Rar file via Rapidshare, I NEVER use anything other than the AVI/WMV file, as I know the dangers.

If you wish, I will move your thread to the software forum and edit out the logs.

Well I guess if the logs show nothing, that would be the best thing to do?

I'm 'fairly' sure I'm right but I'm just a bit lost on what to do next tbh.

If you want to be certain it is not malware related, you need to run and attach the logs for:
    ComboFix
    C:\MGLogs.zip --> from running the C:\MGTools.exe

I guess I should cover all angles - I did try to run Combofix and I got an error message about Kernal debugger needing to be turned off...is that Daemon Tools?

Part of the Read and Run First instructions do request that you disable your disc emulation software.

I did do that and disable my McAfee, then a small error window popped up when I ran Combo and the computer rebooted.

When it restarted back to the desktop, Combofix attempted to run and I think McAfee etc was enabled again - I guess I need to disable again upon the reboot.

I won't be able to get back to this now until tomorrow night, so I'll try Combo again then.

Thanks for the help so far.

No problem. Attach the logs when you are ready. :)

Well, I managed to get a combofix log (Attached) but the MGTools log scan didn't complete. It got to the Analyse.exe part (is that Hijackthis? If so, I've supplied a log in my second post on this thread). It didn't move for almost an hour.

Hopefully this is enough info. The problem still exists on my comp.

You haven't attached anything. Did you disable your AV and AS software prior to trying to run MGTools?

    Sorry, attached this time.

Yes, I everything was deactivated. I just did the same again, with the same result too.

That log is clean. I suspect this is a system problem. Have you tried doing either a system restore or a repair install?

    rkane3000 Private E-2

I thought about doing a restore but not sure what date to take it back to really. Logically I guess I should take it back a couple of weeks to when it was working ok.

Yeah, just took it back a couple of months and the same problem exists.

I guess you guys are satisfied its not a malware issue, so could you move it across to the system section of the forum. Hopefully someone there can figure it out for me.

Thanks again for your help and patience so far.

Can you close this thread then so I can start another one in the software section?

You can start a thread in software without closing this thread. It may help the software people to have a link in your thread to this thread. :)
