I have had a problem with an SVCHOST.exe error. I fixed it as per what the guy in this thread had done:

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=172106

The problem has reappeared. I have Exactly the same symptoms as him. I did shut off Windows image acquisition service. this seems to have remained off. the problem has been gone for a good couple of months. now its back. help?

You should NEVER follow instructions tailored for someone else!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Here are the logs and such as requested.

Also the Svchost.exe error usually only occurs when attempting to access 'my computer' directly. but also occurs when using 'save as' dropdown menu to choose a different directory.

Running from: h:\documents and settings\Scott\My Documents\Downloads\ComboFix.exe <--- Should be directly on your desktop. Move it before we continue.

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1 <--- uninstall this
WinSCP 4.2.1 beta <--- Also uninstall this if you did not intentionally install it yourself.

Your locale is the US, so are you aware of these entries in your HJT log for which the IP address is Australian? I just want to check to be sure so let me know.

    • O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{35136463-CF24-4A03-9369-53752167A39C}: NameServer = 61.9.211.1
    • O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{F2D90238-F647-436A-8DB1-44E32C8A5B78}: NameServer = 61.9.211.1

    Download OTL to your desktop.

    • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
    • Vista and Windows 7 users Right-click OTL and choose Run as Administrator)
    • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
    • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
    • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

Attach both of these logs into your next reply.

    Java Update: Uninstalled.
    WinSCP: is intentional.
My location is actually Australia. How'd you figure I was US?

I moved ComboFix.exe to the desktop did you intend that I run it again or not?

And here are the required logs.

One false positive and also it found stuff trapped in system restore which will no longer be a problem once you have followed final steps. At this point, what actual malware problems are you having?

    DashUnderscoreDash Private E-2

I don't quite understand the question, but I have the SVChost.exe error message (screenie attached)
but I have no idea if this is malware issue or not... that is the only problem I'm having...

Seek out advice in the software forum. Your issues are not malware related. :)
