My C: drive is starting to fail, so I created an image of it to an Expansion Desk external drive using Macrium Reflect 6.3 Home Edition (64-bit), then restored the image to a new destination drive.

I didn’t want to physically install the new (internal) drive before restoring the image to it, because I was afraid the computer might not be able to reboot from the C: drive, and although I have a Windows PE flash drive, I didn’t know if Win PE might have some limitations that might make the restore more difficult. So to do the backup and restore, I connected both the Expansion Desk drive and the new destination drive via USB ports (the latter using a drive adapter).

So all went well, and afterwards, ejecting the drive adapter that my destination disk drive was connected to was no problem.

But when I try to eject my Expansion Desk external drive that was the source of my image, I get an error message saying that a program is still using it (see screenshot).

But there isn’t any other program using it that I can see. None are readily apparent, and Task Manager shows no apps running.

When I restored the image to the destination drive, Macrium Reflect was the only program running. But it is not running now. Is it possible that some component of Reflect is still running in the background?

How about this? I could go into Devices and Printers, right-click on Expansion Desk, and then select Remove Device from the drop down menu. Is that a good idea?

    Any suggestions here?

You can try this. It's certainly not a bad idea.

When I have this difficulty I shut down the pc. Remove drive. Reboot.

I've had that happen with USB sticks. After waiting a sufficient time, just to be sure nothing is writing to the stick. I pull it out. I haven't had a problem with doing that to my USB sticks.

I have usually just shut down, after giving it a little time, I have not tried it with an external hard drive ,after imaging, though.....................
but, it could be worth,control/alt/ delete- task manager- and end process.

No tasks appear in task Manager.

I have been told that during an orderly shutdown, Windows closes all open handles. That sounds right, but can anyone confirm that?

    I came across this.
    From a different thread.
You can disconnect USB devices from within it.

Unfortunately, running USBDeview as Administrator, selecting the mass storage device, and clicking on File > Disconnect Selected Devices just generates the same old error.

    Yes.
Leave the drive connected, restart the PC and then eject the drive.
