False links gamevance

    I got a bug that is creating links on pages where links should not be. It always has ads from Gamevance and my malware Bytes log says HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\AppDataLow\gvtl (Adware.GameVance) -> No action taken.

    There are also a couple that read PUP FunwebProducts and WhiteSmokeRing
    That are somehow attached to live messenger the whiteSmokeRing just doesn't seem to be there to delete.

    How can I delete these. I cannot seem to access the file locations of where they are supposed to be.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

    Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

    READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this aother user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

    Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Welcome to MajorGeeks!

    RE: READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    You were instructed in our guide to save and run ComboFix from your desktop (move it there now) - not here:
    TimW will still require the rest of the requested logs:
    • SASlog.txt log from SuperAntiSpyware.
    • RRlog.txt
    • MGlogs.zip - normally it is C:\MGlogs.zip - only attach this log from MGtools.exe DO NOT attach any logs seen in the MGtools folder.
    • You should attach all of your logs to one message after you have completed all scans.

    Please take ComboFix and move it directly to your desktop, not here:
    Running from: c:\users\Family\Downloads\ComboFix.exe

    You did not attach the C:\MGLogs.zip.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    c:\users\Default\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp\enmow.exe
    c:\users\Default\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp\veoxx.exe

    Folder::
    c:\users\Family\AppData\Roaming\Yruc

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    You have two AV programs installed. You need to uninstall one of them:
    Norton Internet Security
    McAfee Security Scan Plus

    Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Now copy just the bold text below to notepad (Do not include any space above the word REGEDIT). Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
    to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Uninstall this outdated version of Java

    Java(TM) 6 Update 7

    You are using a version of MGTools that is around six months out of date!

    Now go to this MGTools and download the new version of MGtools.exe. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

    Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    Winferno Subscription Service
    File::
    c:\windows\Tasks\WSSHelper.job
    c:\program files\Common Files\Winferno\WSS\WSSHelper.exe
    c:\program files\Common Files\Winferno\WSE2007.dll
    Folder::
    c:\program files\Common Files\Winferno

    @Denied: (A) (Everyone)
    @Allowed: (B 1 2 3 4 5) (S-1-5-20)

    Registry::

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{CF739809-1C6C-47C0-85B9-569DBB141420}]

    FF - Ext: Search Toolbar: searchtoolbar@zugo.com - %profile%\extensions\searchtoolbar@zugo.com

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Run the new C:\MGTools.exe and attach the C:\MGlogs.zip for TimW to review. Let him know how things are running for you now, and if the above fix made any difference or not.

    Before receiving this last post I ran MBAM again with the internet unplugged, It found that bug again, so I deleted it, then turned on Spybot tea timer and my anti spyware, then rebooted, Tea Timer aske dme to allow a few values to be deleted and I said yes. I went to my web page and saw the links, I went to a bunch of others and did not. I checked my test site, then returned to my site and everything seems to be fine now.
    Thank you , I will be sure to write about this place to the members of my site.

    Update. After running the fix and then running MBAM, Mbam once again found the bug and deleted it. Spybot S&D immediately showed value adds which I denied, and for the moment we seem to be OK again. Here is the MBAM log as well. But..where is it coming from that spybot had to deny it again?

    Oh Wait!! After just a few moments. There it is again. Im going to take this computer out back now, pour gasoline on it, and burn it down...

    You have not been disabling Spybots TeaTimer and therefore the fixes are not working.

    Please Disable Spybot's TeaTimer --> Should have been done as per the R&R instructions!

    * Run Spybot and click Mode
    * Select Advanced Mode.
    * Then click Tools and select Resident.
    * Now in the right window pane, uncheck TeaTimer.
    * Also while this is open, in the left column now select IE Tweaks
    * and then in the right pane make sure all the Miscellaneous locks are unchecked.
    * Now quit Spybot!

    Now re-run the fixes I gave you in post #10 --> both the HJT fix and the registry fix.

    Now go to start / run / and type:
    regedit.

    Once it opens go to view / find and see if any of these keys exist:
    * HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{7370F91F-6994-4595-9949-601FA2261C8D}
    * HKCU\Software\gvtl
    * HKLM\Software\Classes\clsid\{7370F91F-6994-4595-9949-601FA2261C8D}
    * HKLM\Software\Classes\Gamevance.Linker.1
    * HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Gamevance
    * HKLM\Software\Classes\Gamevance.Linker
    * HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Gamevance

    Tell me what you find.

    Now with TeaTimer still disabled, re-run MBAM and this time do a deep scan.

    Attach the new MBAM log.

  22. jeshl

    Actually, I had been turning off the tea timer, but at some point noticed that MBAM was finding it, and with the tea timer on I was able to delete it and then immediately taskman would pop up as well as some other thing, which I would blacklist using tea timer. Today, its no longer gamevance, but something else.
    I did as you instructed again.

    Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop

    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor.
    • Allow the application to run and a window will open showing that it is TDSSkiller from Kaspersky
    • Click Start scan
    • It will run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
    Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    When I open a web page, like yours, I will see certain words that are highlighted in green like links. Underlined twice. At first when I would hover over them it would bring up a small box with an ad in it pertaining to the word highlighted. (ie. "Continue" would be for continuing education)
    I believe it all started when my teenage son clicked a link on facebook to find out who had blocked him. It was soon after hat this issue started.
    After we got rid of it the second time, the name of the company at the top of said ad was changed to venture, and even now after running spybot and superantispyware, it seems to be gone. However when I leave the computer overnight, in the morning it will be back again.

    Many websites have embedded links in them. That doesn't mean you have malware. However, you can do this:

    Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

    NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

    Note: It is normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

    Now let's flush the Java Cache
    • Click Start > Settings > Control Panel
    • Double click the Java icon (be patient, it may take a while to open)
    • Now click the General tab and under the Temporary Internet File area
    • Click the Settings button and then click the Delete Files... button.
    • In the next popup click OK.
    If you have multiple Java plugin icons in Control Panel follow the above to clear all their caches.

    Now let's flush the FireFox Cache
    • In Firefox, click Tools
    • select Options
    • select Privacy
    • in the section labeled Private Data click Clear Now
    Now let's flush the Internet Explorer Cache
    • In Internet Explorer, click Tools
    • Internet Options
    • Now on the General tab and click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too
    • Click OK.
    • When it finishes Click OK.
    Now let's flush the DNS cache
    • Click Start > Run and type in cmd
    • Click OK.
    • This will open a command prompt.
    • Type or copy and paste the following line in the command window:
      ipconfig /flushdns
    • Hit Enter
    • Exit the command window
    Now use Avenger:

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.

    Now tell me if it is still there.

    I understand about the links so I have enclosed a screen shot of your website with the ad when hovering over a fake link. I am also Including the avenger log. It is not working. Am I going to have to re-install windows to get rid of this thing? Today is the first day we have not been able to at least temporarily get rid of it. hmmm

    Oh it seems your uploader will not allow me to upload the screen shot.
    But in one of your posts here windows 7 was linked, as was desktop, as was continue. and many other words. I hover over the "link" and it presents a smallish box with ads. Now even with video.

    My guess is that you are referring to double underlined words showing Vibrant Media Ads which is not a problem. When you move your mouse over these special keywords, a Vibrant Ad will show. Is this what you are referring too? If so, they are normal.

  43. jeshl

    jeshl Private E-2

    It started out as gamevance. Now it is something else. It is normal? How did these start? And yes. Its a green link underlined twice. It is appearing in places like these posts. Where I know the website did not place them. They are on MY website where I did not place them. Why is this normal? People getting ads from links on MY website that I am not making any money from? Bad Juju
    I will get a screen shot when they re-appear in the morning. And I wil send it for verification.
    Thank you

    For Chrome and Safari:
    http://code.google.com/p/adblockforchrome/

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0
