    Hey folks.

I just removed a bunch of malware from my computer. I think at this point it's actually all gone.

There were a number of programs that kept popping up so I don't know the names of all of the programs I removed.

Apparently something called "pokki" was there because when I right click on an item on my desktop, the drop down menu that has "open, open with, etc." also has "add to pokki menu". Clicking it does nothing, and I've checked pretty thoroughly that pokki isnt on my computer. Having it there is harmless, but I hate seeing it, so I hope someone can tell me how to fix this.

Welcome to the Malware Removal forum. :)

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual update Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only RogueKiller and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run the rest of the READ & RUN ME FIRST instructions on the infected account.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Thank you. While I was reading the steps, something occurred to me. It says to begin by backing everything up.. This is a relatively new computer and I don't have a lot of data or customization to lose. I backed up all my important files from my old computer. Would it save us a lot of trouble if I restored the factory settings? I don't know exactly what that does, or how much I would be losing. I know I wouldn't want to do that if it meant I would need to reinstall all my drivers and whatnot.

Thanks for taking the time, and sorry for not following the first directions, I just thought it might help if you knew this.

Yes you would I expect. :( The choice is yours but I promise if you want to follow our instructions, I will do my utmost to rid the machine of anything that may be on it.

Thanks. Even though trusting people on the internet is a terrible idea, I'm gonna trust you on this one. What you're doing here is really awesome. I get a little depressed when I think about the way people treat each other on the internet. There's the harassment between young kids, and that's bad enough, but then there's also these people out there who are trying their hardest to absolutely ruin your computer with adware and other crap. I'm actually really good at avoiding these things. I hadn't had a computer for a few months, I get one and I get on and I forgot to have my guard up for a few minutes and bam! I get inundated with new icons and homepage hijacking crap. Most of the time it doesn't happen to me, but it happens to my parents all the time, and that does not sit well with me. They work hard and they work around the clock because I've been ill for the past few years. They come home from their full time jobs to help and feed me, and most of thier money goes to living expenses, largely because of my health issues. They've never complained about it. I hate to see them spending their hard earned cash and then having their computer get ruined by some scumbag out there. /rant

AAAAnyway... What you people do here is really great because you're offsetting this horrible phenomenon. These people are going out of their way to ruin something and you're going out of your way to fix it, because that's the only way. I gotta say thanks in advance for what you guys do here.

    I already have another question:

The guide gives me a link for if I have browser redirect problems, and says this: "ONLY run the above link if you are having Google Hijacking problems and when you finish the above, you MUST return here and continue!!!!!!"

I was having Browser redirect problems before I came here, but I fixed them before finding this site. I don't know for sure if what I did stopped them or did everything that needed to be done, but I just don't want to do anything without you knowing as much information about my situation as possible. So I WAS having Google redirect problems but they seem to have been fixed. Should I still use that link to make sure the problem is really gone?

Yes, why not, run the redirection instructions. :)

Okay, I immediately have a problem. It says "Click Start > Control Panel
Double click the Java icon "

I don't see a Java Icon. Also, the guide mentions Windows Vista and 7, but I'm using 8.1

Just skip what you can't do, and yes, the instructions will be fine for Win8, just follow steps for Win 7 :)
