Are you aware that for the last few months, a crack team of Distributed Computers have been grappling their way up from the bottom of the Folding@Home charts, and are now (as of this typing) rounding at the Top 3% of teams in the entire project?

That might not sound impressive at first glance, but many of you may not realise that we have traveled from near last place, in a mass of 32719 teams, to the Top 1000 teams.

If you want to get involved, scroll down to HOW CAN YOU HELP at the bottom of the post!

    WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
Folding@Home is a distributed computing project (DC), which means computers all over the world are combining their computational power and working together to solve big problems. For example, another DCing project Seti@Home searches radio logs for traces of extra-terrestrial inteligent life. This is a huge project and even utilising the most advanced supercomputer in existance, it would still take decades to go through all the data.

The Folding@Home project mostly concentrates on how protiens fold, running complex simulations. The master server computers in Stanford university churn out new protiens to run simulations on constantly, with the aim of finding one which responds to a specific goal the scientists specify. This might be a mis-fold, or a response that causes a specific disease.

By running Folding@Home, we are donating our idle CPU time to help cure diseases and further medical research!. A very abundant resource in the average Geek household, which we are more than willing to part with to further medial science.

Folding@Home is designed so that a group of people can form a team, which many technically minded computer users have formed. Major Geeks is not an exception! Since the user base her at MG like to make their machines run as well as they possibly can, they are well suited for such competition! With just 14 members, we've climbed the charts steadily from the start (or re-start!). Right now there are over thirty thousand teams in the League!

    OUR STATS
In our mighty little team, we have over 35 computers working on the task, and we've churned out 641 Work Units, and our score is rounding off at about 60,000 points earnt.

Overall, we currently have 14 members, 8 of which with more than 2k points, and 2 with over 10k!!

On average we pump out 13,066 points per week overall.

Right now our production rate is much greater than the nearest ranked teams:
And as you can see we are flying through the ranks right now! But we have to keep going at this rate or we will get stuck on the road to our next goal :D

    WHAT IS OUR NEXT GOAL....?
....Is to reach the TOP 100 TEAMS .... here we will be competing with names such as [H]ardOCP, Apple Computer inc. , The Entire of Russia (apparently!), CustomPC, Hewlett Packard, Fark... to name but a few!

This will be a challenge to be sure, but with a little help, we think we can get there. These teams have in excess of 40 computers on the task, and earn an astonishing ammount of points every day. We could compete, BUT only if we get a few more team members.

    HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Remember, every little helps and even a slow computer will earn points. So anyone with a PC (or Mac!) is welcome to join the team. You don't need an advanced knowlege of computers, either, setting up a Folding@Home client is as easy as can be :)

So, where do you have to go? First stop should probably be....
Folding@Home Client Types Rounup & Tweaks - so you know how it all works and how to get going!
The Official Folding@Home Thread - Read the first post to see what folding is all about, and skip to the latest replies to see how we're doing.
Check out our Stats - at the official Stanford website to see how we're doing!

Running the folding client causes no performance loss on computers, as it only works when the CPU isnt being used by your applications. You can run a screensaver client which will only run when you're not at your computer. So there's no reason why you shouldn't join up now!

When installing the client, our team number is 12072 , and enter your MG username so we know who you are!

If any new members need any help, JUST ASK .... any of us seasoned Folders will be more than happy to help you out! Us being the Tweakin', Freakin', Geeksters that we are, we will be able to help you get the best out of your system no matter what it's made of!

    So Join Up Today!

NOTE : We are certain that the Folding@Home client contains NO SPYWARE, and if you want to question that, take it up at the Stanford Forums. It will need to "call home" occasionally to download new work or upload completed work, and you should make sure your firewall will let it do this.

Since the user base here at MG like to make their machines run as well as they possibly can, they are well suited for such competition! We now have 617 members (555 Active CPU's), we've climbed the charts steadily from the start (or re-start!). Right now there are over seventy thousand teams in the League!

    OUR STATS
In our mighty little team, we have over 555 computers working on the task, and we've churned out 641 Work Units, and our score is rounding off at about 16,631,179 points earnt.

Overall, we currently have 617 members, 2 of which with more than 1M points, and many more catching up!!!

On average we pump out 88,137 points per week overall.

Right now our production rate has slowed down so we need more people to join up on the Fold@home war front
And as you can see we slowed down abit right now! But we have to keep going because at this rate we will get stuck on the road to our next goal if we do nothing :(

    WHAT IS OUR NEXT GOAL....?
....Is to reach the TOP 50 TEAMS .... here we will be competing with names such as [H]ardOCP, Apple Computer inc. , The Entire of Russia (apparently!), CustomPC, Hewlett Packard, Fark... to name but a few!

This will be a challenge for sure, but with a little help, we think we can get there. This one team "The New Xtreme Resources" they are #50 and has in excess of 900 users but only afew maybe 10 of there users are still on the task, and we could compete, BUT only if we get a few more team members back Folding and more new team members.
