Tip # 58 My Explorer / Explorer in XP
Sick and tired of Microsoft's My Explorer opening up in "My Documents" by default.
As far as I am concerned, if I click on Explorer I want it open up in Explorer.
If I click on My Documents, I want it to open up in My Documents.
Surely not too much to ask?

To make these happen, set up a Shortcut (or SlickRun MagicWord) as:-

For Explorer, Shortcut is c:\windows\explorer.exe /n/e,C:

For My Documents, Shortcut is c:\Documents and Settings\Barry\My Documents Obviously substitute your name for "Barry". doh. :-D

    For My Computer ( a customised different version) try c:\windows\explorer.exe /n, /e, /select, C:\

This opens up My Computer, BUT with a compacted view of C:\ drive.
Make sure you have 3 commas (,) and 3 spaces in this Shortcut.

    Tip # 60 Checking out a website?
I came across these links when checking out a website before placing an order with them.

    http://www.quantcast.com/worldstart.com
    http://www.indeed.com/cmp/Worldstart.com

also checked out MajorGeeks at http://www.quantcast.com/majorgeeks.com just out of curiousity. Not sure how much MA and CP would agree with their summary, but interesting anyhow.

Just substitute your web site name for "worldstart.com" in the first 2 examples and it might / will throw more light on that website and maybe help you from getting ripped off.

    Tip # 62 Inkjet printers.
Make sure you use the ON / OFF switch on your Inkjet printer instead of just switching it off at the wall socket, or surge suppressor. This ensures the printer heads will park properly, and may stop the heads drying out and becoming blocked.

No selections for today. I think it is a long weekend in the USA, so nothing has been listed for Saturday 11th Oct 2008 as at this time, right now.

As it is the Great Race here in Australia today, with the proceedings starting in 30 minutes and going for around 11 hours, I, for one, will be sitting in front of the TV set most of the day.

If you don't know what I am raving about, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bathurst_1000 or Google for Bathurst 1000

    Another link is http://www.v8supercars.com.au/

161 laps of the one of the toughest racing circuits in the world, with 23 corners (none of this oval racing here) and around 6 1/2 hours duration.
Some parts of the course are so steep that they used to run a hill climb up it.

The most coveted trophy in Australasian motorsport. Starts around 10 am Australian Eastern Daylight Saving Time and is telecast to 130 countries. V8 road racing at its finest. 2 makes only, Ford and Holden (GMH) 4 door sedans with around 600 horsepower and speeds up to nearly 300 kilometres per hour (190 mph approx).

Catch you later, or maybe tomorrow. :-D Bazza

Ah, it's great to be back and using my trusty (?) XP Pro laptop. After 3 days of headbanging (see my avatar :-D) and after much cursing and swearing, I finally succeeding in restoring my full backup. No where that I could see was the hint that you can't do a full restore from within Windows (even if you are running the restore program from an external drive). You run it from a special bootup CD with the program on it. I didn't have a bootup CD, of course, as I had downloaded the program from the Net. Finally after trying everything, I rang the Australian distributor of the program and thanks to Toby, he guided me through the whole exercise and here I am again. One of life's little learning experiences. :-D

Tip # 64 Easy Duplicate File Finder 2.1
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Easy_Duplicate_File_Finder_d5695.html
Make sure you use the option to skip Windows system files. I didn't spot this and spent 3 days getting my laptop back to its usual state.

A suggestion:- Create a Folder called C:\deleted Files, or similar, and copy your duplicated files there befor e you decide to delete them. It might be a good idea to back them up, also, to a USB stick, external drive, or CD/DVD.

    Bazza

PS: I will try this program again later, but I will make sure I enable the "Windows system files option" and have a FULL (very very recent) backup.

My first run found over 9,000 duplicated files so another run would be worth it, IMO

Tip # 66 Typing Long File names.

If the file name contains spaces, or the filename or directory is longer than eight characters, place quotes around the long file name as shown below.

Say you are trying to change directory to C:\Documents and Settings\Barry\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music

    Just type:-

    "C:\Documents and Settings\Barry\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music"
(NOTE the quotes added before and after this example)
Instead of having to type all this crap, as follows :- c:\Docum~1\Barry\"My Doc~1"\"My Mus~1"\iTunes\"iTunes~1" that is required in a DOS box

He provided the country code link to Internet Country Codes at http://www.learnthenet.com/english/html/85tldn.htm

Most of us know that .uk is the United KIngdom, .au is Australia, .nz is New Zealand, etc.

How about .ma or .mo? Which is Morocco and which is Macau ? :-D
Nup, you're wrong. :) .mo is Macau and .ma is Morocco. :confused :confused
There are many other suffixes that are not all plain sailing. :)
Bookmark the link to the codes for future use, maybe.

    Thanks plodr. :major

    Tip # 69 Prefetch.
When was the last time you cleaned out your Prefetch folder?
Prefetch was introduced into XP as a cache for recently visited sites.
The theory is if you just visited a site and want to visit it again, then the entry in Prefetch will be slightly quicker to find and execute
than typing in a URL, or selecting a Favourite, and visiting the site again.

Find it at C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch (in XP, anyhow).
How many Prefetch items are there, and how long do they go back in time? :) Check out that the default is checked (ticked) in CCleaner (CC) to clear out your Prefetch folder every time you run CC.
I have just checked again and CCleaner (athough checked) did NOT clean out my Prefetch entries.

I then ran CleanUp! 4.5.2, available at http://www.majorgeeks.com/CleanUp_d4895.html after CCleaner and it certainly cleaned Prefetch out, for me.
Beware, there are some warnings when you go to the MG Cleanup! link. I have used it for years with no problems but I cannot guarantee it with your PC setup, I run both daily, to clean it out but that's me. :)

I suggest that you clean out Prefetch at least weekly. Bazza

    Tip # 73 RAM 101

How much RAM do you need?
    Visit http://www.kingston.com/tools/assessor/default.asp

Identify the correct RAM for your computer
Visit http://www.crucial.com or http://www.kingston.com for on-line scans of your system.

    Test your RAM.
    Visit http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp where you'll find
    the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool.
You'll need a bootup Floppy or CD to use the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool. At http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp there is the option to create a bootable floppy, or if no floppy in your system, then create an ISO file to write to a CD. A CD-RW might be a good idea. Then you can add your favourite utilities to the bootup CD.

Heaps of other tools at Diagnostics at http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads7.html or Memory at http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads26.html

Cheap way to add RAM to Vista.

Use an appropriately feature enabled USB stick (or SD memory card) to add extra RAM to Vista. Plug the USB stick into Vista, and if the device is compatible, then ReadyBoost will automatically appear as an option. Most new USB sticks are already Vista ReadyBoost compatible.

I dont as prefetch is nothing to do with webpages or sites, its purpose is to load pages or more so the .exe applications you run on a regular basis quicker as it can find the necassary files to load quickly, Vista has super-prefetch as it works better than XP, deleting prefetch files does no real harm but your PC will not be at peak until the core apps are prefetched again, so will be a tad slower to load... more info Ryan Myers is Dev on Windows Client Perf Team

Surface is really cool, had chance to play with one at MSFT UK a few weeks back and touch tech is likely to be in Windows 7 and for those of you who think Surface is cool like I do, just bare a thought that the backend is run via Vista!

My bad. :( I don't know why I mentioned sites when it is *.exe as you pointed out. I still like to clean them out regularly, but that is just me. I don't mind the extra wait. Has anyone actually timed the difference between loading a program from Prefetch and launching from a menu or Shortcut.

They are in the latest to the earliest sequence ( on my PC) which would negate the advantagesomewhat, of Prefetch in a big file. Strict Alpha (if possible) would be a better sequence for speed of lookup, IMO.

As for MS Surface, it looks like a cool must-have-in-the-future PC accessory. :-D I'll be hoping to spot it as part of TV grabs for the USA 2008 election.

    Tip # 74 .NET Framework versions 1.1, 2.0. 3.0, 3.5?

Do you need them all, or can you use v3.5 cover all previous versions?
Unfortunately they are NOT cumulative. The answer is NO, if you were requested by a program to load a particular version of .NET then you have to load it. :cry

It is no disaster if you delete any version however, as a program will soon notify you if it finds a particular version is missing.
