    Hello

I somehow got all kinds of popups telling me my computer was infected. Like a fool I believed it was legit, and ended up purchasing their bogus program (which i found out to be bogus upon getting back online. I need help getting this removed from my computer. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this aother user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Download and save the below to your PC (save it anywhere you can find it. The Desktop is fine). Then doube click on it to run it.

    AVPFind.bat

It should take a couple minutes to run. You will see a black command prompt window while it is running and it should close when it is finished. Once it finishes, attach the c:\avplog.txt file that is will hopefully create as long as the malware does not block the batch file from running.

    Now download and Run exeHelper

    • Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
    • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
    • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
    • Post the contents of log.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com)

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Also please try running the below online scan:

    http://www.superantispyware.com/onlinescan.html

Reboot immediately after scanning if it finds and removes anything. Let me know if anything was found. It does not save a log.

Then try running these instructions: Using MGtools

Attach the below logs when finished with all of the above:

    • C:\avplog.txt - from AVPfind
    • log.txt - from exeHelper
    • C:\MGlogs.zip - from MGtools

The C:\ assumes that drive C is you Windows boot drive. If you boot from another drive, then use the correct drive letter above.

This may sound really stupid, but when im downloading all the programs your mentioning to me, rather than appearing on my desktop for me to click and run, they dont appear anywhere (unless im just not looking the right places.

You need to check your browser to find where it downloads things to. Use tools / otions.

    I also ran http://www.superantispyware.com/onlinescan.html

it found 8 things and the scan took almost an hour. I did the fix thru the superantispyare program and rebooted as instructed to do so .

when i tried to download the exehelper in my download folder it lists the exehelper as a failed download. when i try to download and run C:\MGlogs.zip - from MGtools it wont let me, it brings up a box that asks me what program i want to run the thing in and i dont know what to select.

any help would be appreciated ..

    See this:
How to attach items to your post.

Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Tell me if you have this on your system C:\MGTools.exe ---what happens when you double click it?

  10. Rastaub79

Ok I have the application C:\MGTools.exe when i double click it, rather than it opening I get a box that asks me what program i want to use to open the file . which incidentally is the same box I get when i go into firefox.

Sorry in relation to not sending the log as a link.

Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.

There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Administrator

You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

    1. Rkill.exe
    2. Rkill.com
    3. Rkill.scr
    4. Rkill.pif

    * Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
    * If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
    * A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
    * If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
    * If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
    * Do not reboot until instructed.
    * If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run the following.

Now download and Run exeHelper from Raktor

    • Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
    • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
    • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
    • A log file named log.txt will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com
    • Attach the log.txt file to your next message.

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

If you already have them installed, be sure to update Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware before the scan!

Now run this: Using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Now run this: SUPERAntiSpyware - running & getting a log

    Now run this: Using MGtools

Now you need to attach (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post ) the below logs created while running the above scans

    • exeHelper log
    • Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log
    • MGlogs.zip - normally it is C:\MGlogs.zip - only attach this log from MGtools.exe DO NOT attach any logs seen in the MGtools folder.

The biggest problem I see is that you are running two AV programs as well as two firewall programs:

    McAfee Personal Firewall Service
Sunbelt Personal Firewall 4 ---> remove this!!
    McAfee AV
Authentium AntiVirus SDK - 2 ---> remove this!!

Run CCleaner and then make sure this folder is empty ( you will not be able to remove items from todays date):
    C:\Documents and Settings\Robert Staub\Local Settings\Temp\

Part of your problem is that you need, at the least, twice the amount of RAM:
    Total Physical Memory 512.00 MB
    Available Physical Memory 112.12 MB

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Robert Staub\Local Settings\Application Data\RHpCMfQD4

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

First we need to try this:

go to Start>Run, type in "appwiz.cpl" (without the quotes) and click OK (or press Enter).

    Does the Add/remove applet start?

    If it doesn't:

You can try replacing it with a new copy through System File Checker. Rather than running the whole SFC routine, you can go to Start>Run, type in "msconfig" (without the quotes), click OK and on the General tab, click the "Expand File" button. Tell it you want to extract appwiz.cpl, tell it to extract it from either C:\I386 or your XP CD (which you'll need to put in the CD drive) and tell it to extract it to C:\Windows\System32.

    Does it work now?

  19. Rastaub79

    Rastaub79 Private E-2

    Ok

typing this into the run box appwiz.cpl" did work and i was able uninstall the Sunbelt firewall, however i couldnt find authentium antivirus anywhere either in program files or on the add/remove program screen.

Now i read around here awhile and saw this authentium can be hidden and may have come with something else i had from a former isp. so i deleted all my verizon stuff (haven't been with them in almost a yr) maybe they gave me authentium. what is your opinion on this ?

Im going to attempt to run c-cleaner and the rest of the steps tommorrow morning , however wanted to address something with you, i still cant into my mcafee . I know you mention disabling antivirus before running mgtools .. just checking how i can get into it.. the mcafee icon appears but clicking it has been futile...

    any help is greatly appreciated..

Also, i tried to do this

and when i type in msconfig, I get the open with box ..

    Hello ,

Thanks again for all the help. I tried to run this (as you described yesterday) Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

however a few problems persist, it only appears in a black dos box, rather than giving me the option to select and fix those lines . and im still not able to physically open my mcafee antivrus to disable it ..

    any help is greatly appreciated

This is sounding like a file association problem. Please use this LINK and scroll down to number 9 --> fixing exe file associations. Tell me if that worked.

    Tim,

That worked like a charm, I can now get into Mcafee and I dont constantly get open with prompts. This should properly enable me to run the rest of the fixes. I will do these soon and post the logs.
