    Hello,

    I have all the symptoms of the google redirect virus: Slow running computer and redirection to random sites when I click on my google search results.

    I added the gooredfix log as you requested. I also read the readme and completed part of it. I updated Java and was already running only Norton Anti Virus and Sybot. I really only have just this one issue, so I did not download other programs to clean my computer. After reading other threads about this virus, more specific expertise seems to be required, so I went straight to posting a thread.

    Thank you very much for your help!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    First do this:
    * Please download TDSSKiller to your Desktop
    * Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    * Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.

    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -v

    * Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    * When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply.

    Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

    Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

    READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this aother user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

    Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Hi again,

    Thank you for your help. Unfortunately the TDSS Killer did not find anything wrong. It simply found zero infected files.

    Since my last post, I have attempted to use XdelScan, which failed to work properly (despite disabling my Symantec Endpoint Protection and Spybot Teatimer).

    I also downloaded the free scan from Hitman Pro 3.5, which found the files atapi.sys and atapi.sys.tmp, in WINDOW\System32\Drivers. I was able to delete atapi.sys.tmp with Killbox, but was unable to delete atapy.sys.

    My symantec endpoint protection is now picking up and isolating trojans, called "Backdoor.tidserv!inf"

    Following your basic README instrictions, I:

    -only have one anti-virus and one anti-ware
    -deleted Viewpoint Media Player
    -updated Java
    -cleared Symantec quarantine
    -Installed & ran CC Cleaner
    -Looked over your known spyware list
    -downloaded and ran superanti spyware, malwarebites, combofix, rootrepeal, and MG tools.

    I'm still having trouble. Do you have any other recommendations? I know you guys don't like HiJackThis, but I attached the log anyways, hoping that it will shed some light on my problem.

    Thanks once again!

    You need to finish my instructions and attach the requested logs:
    SAS
    MBAM
    RootRepeal
    ComboFix
    C:\MGLogs.zip --> from running C:\MGTools.exe

    You need to disable TeaTimer still!!

    * Run Spybot and click Mode
    * Select Advanced Mode.
    * Then click Tools and select Resident.
    * Now in the right window pane, uncheck TeaTimer.
    * Also while this is open, in the left column now select IE Tweaks
    * and then in the right pane make sure all the Miscellaneous locks are unchecked.
    * Now quit Spybot!

    These are the logs I could obtain. I'm having trouble running ComboFix. I'll try again, but in the meantime, do these help?

    I did disable Teatimer, I just re-enable it after I complete any tasks that require me to disable it. I will disable it again.

    Hi Tim,

    I am at work right now and cannot provide the log. In the meantime are there any recommedations you can provide? I have provided a ton of information and Im really pressed for time. I really appreciate your help.

    I haven't seen anything as of yet to explain your redirects. That's why I need to see the MGLogs.zip. But you can answer this; does it happen all browsers?

    Hi Tim,

    Ah, I didn't realize all of my logs were within normal limits. I'm attaching the mgtools log now.

    I don't want to jinx anything, but I don't seem to have the redirecting problem on either Firefox or IE! However, my computer is still running slower than usual. I also get some random popups, but maybe that's due to my disabling teatimer?

    Thanks once again!

    You can remove these from your temp folder:
    Code:
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\"
    a9r3b.tmp     Feb 21 2010         485  "A9R3B.tmp"
    flab8.tmp     Feb 20 2010     1724315  "flaB8.tmp"
    flac1.tmp     Feb 21 2010    12838209  "flaC1.tmp"
    Now tell me what is slow? If it is boot up, you can use a start up manager such as Startup_CPL

    but I am not seeing any malware issues in your logs.

    Hi Tim,

    Thank you for your help. I definitely still think I have a problem, because Symantec continues to pick up that same trojan I mentioned before.

    Everything about my computer still runs slowly. Primarily, whenever I initiate a program, such as firefox, or even when I open My Computer or a folder.

    Hi Tim,

    I just wanted to give you an update on my problem. I still do experience google redirects, although considerably less frequently. I also experience pop ups (something that does not typically occur on my PC), increased length of time required to open programs (e.g. firefox),and Symantec occasionally picks up a Trojan (also something that does not typically occur on my PC).

    Are there any other logs I can provide for you?

    Hi Tim,

    I forgot to mention that I now have trouble loading videos on any web browser. There is no sound (which works fine with video files on my computer) and I have trouble loading other types of multimedia. Is this a problem with flash player?

    Should I just give up and reinstall windows? I was really hoping to avoid this, but nothing seems to be working.

    You need to give me a log from Symantec or at least the exact path to what it is reporting. I also want you to do this:
    http://www.superantispyware.com/onlinescan.html

    Reboot immediately after scanning if it finds and removes anything. Let me know if anything was found. It does not save a log.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Hi Tim,

    The superantispyware scan unfortunately did not find anything. I ran MGtools and attached the log anyways. I also attached the Symantec logs. These files are the same risky files HitmanPro3.5 picked up when I ran their free scan. For some reason I couldn't delete them with KillBox.

    Hi,

    I saved and extracted TDSSkiller to my desktop last time, but this time I ran it, it did find and delete 2 infected files, but failed to delete a third - our friend the atapi.sys file. It's very resilient!

    I attached the log.

    We need to use Combofix to replace your infected file. I am not seeing it listed as on your desktop. Please download it directly to your desktop but do not run it. We will get a log from it after we do the following:

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    FCopy::
    C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\atapi.sys | C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\atapi.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\atapi.sys | C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\atapi.sys

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hey!

    I followed all of your directions and have attached the requested logs. So far everything seems to be working normally - except that I can't re-enable Symantec's auto-protect function. So I'm not sure if there are trojans still on my computer. Do you think something was altered during the combofix scan?

    But besides that, I haven't had any pop-ups or re-directs, so hopefully it will stay that way!

    Not sure what is going on with Symantec, you may have to uninstall and try re-installing. In the meantime, use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\tsk70.tmp

    Otherwise, your logs are clean. What issues other than your AV are you having?

    Hi Tim,

    Everything seems to be working fine now! I think that did it. Thank you so much for your help! I know who I'll be going to if I ever have any malware problems in the future.

    You are most welcome.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners.They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to tahe cleaning procedures ian step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
      a
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
