    Hi all, great site!

Was wondering if I could have some help.

Ok Long story short: A computer in the house was hit by the UPS email containing the lovely "Internet Security 2010" malware.

    NOD32 already installed.

Ran Malwarebytes as all guides state, cleared it and it was gone. Decided to run a few other programs after such as Spybot, Ccleaner and Spyware Doctor.

A day later its back. So start up in safe mode, deep scan with Malwarebytes and it clears it. Spybot etc.

NOD32 keeps complaining NDIS.SYS is infected and cant delete. It has been saying this ever since we got the nasty Internet Secuirty 2010 malware.

    (WINDOWS\SYS32\DRIVERS\NDIS.SYS)

I was going to run Combofix but have read not to run it unless you completely know what your doing, which I dont.

So my question: Is it a good idea to run Combofix and what do I need to know? Dont know if there are any scripts I need to use?

    Any help much appreciated :)

    -Gary

Yes! Run combofix. But make sure you are following the steps in our procedures in order.Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

I need to see logs from the following in order to work up a fix for you:

    • SUPERAntispyware
    • Malware Bytes
    • RootRepeal
    • Combofix
    • MGTools

Sorry for the delay in getting back. I have been away over the weekend.

I have attached the logs of all progams requested.

Super AntiSpyware killed the machine (restarted) when scanning so I unchecked the below and re-scanned:

    Use Kernal Direct File Access
    Use Kernal Direct Registry Access

Combofix log is included in the MGogs zip.

    Thankyou for your help

IMPORTANT: A recent bug in combofix means that we will not be running it now until a fix has been addressed. During this time we will turn to other tools to assist with malware removal.

Please leave combofix alone as it would be dangerous to use it at this point. Just let me review your logs and I will get back to you with a set of instructions as soon as possible. But I am about to head out to go home again now so bear with me.

    1. What is drive P and why are you running Combofix from this location when it is meant to be run directly from your desktop?

I want you to delete the copy you have and download a fresh version to your desktop but do not run it yet!:

    ComboFix

    2. Your Malware Bytes log reveals you took no action on the threats it found, did you indeed fix what it found afterwards? If not then please do so now by updating MBAM, re scanning, and fixing all it finds, attach the log it produces into your next reply.

    3. Please go to Add and Remove programs and uninstall the following software:

    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 17
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 4
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 7

    4. Please go to Jotti's malware scan

(If more than one file needs scanned they must be done separately and logs posted for each one)
    • Copy the file path in the below Code box:
      Code:
      c:\windows\system32\lfrlact.sys

    • At the upload site, click once inside the window next to Browse.
    • Press Ctrl+V on the keyboard (both at the same time) to paste the file path into the window.
    • Next click Submit file
    • Your file will possibly be entered into a queue which normally takes less than a minute to clear.
    • This will perform a scan across multiple different virus scanning engines.
    • Important: Wait for all of the scanning engines to complete.
    • Once the scan is finished, Copy and then Paste the link in the address bar into your next reply.

    5. File copy

    Please do the following:

    1. Click on the Start button, then click on Run...

    2. In the empty "Open:" box provided, type cmd and press Enter
    • This will launch a Command Prompt window (looks like DOS).
    3. Copy the entire bold text below to the clipboard by highlighting all of it and pressing Ctrl+C (or after highlighting, right-click and select Copy).

    4. In the Command Prompt window, paste the copied text by right-clicking and selecting Paste.

    5. Press Enter.

    6. When successful, you should get the below message within the Command Prompt:

    • "1 file(s) copied"
    7. NOTE: If you didn't get this message, stop and tell me first. Executing any following instructions (with avenger) are dependent upon this file being successfully copied.

    8. Exit the Command Prompt window.

    6. Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    8. Also delete all files in the below folder except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

    9. Now reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    10. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from avenger and also the log I requested from MBAM if you didn't previously fix what you found.

    11. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    1. Sorry was running Combofix from another hard drive, my bad.

    2. The Malware results from Malwarebytes was dummy sys files created by SDfix, I assumed these were not harmful but have re-scanned (and updated) and removed all.
Note: AGprotect keeps coming up everytime I run Malwarebytes, It will not disinfect.

    3. Have unistalled the following from programs:

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    Java(TM) 6 Update 17
    Java(TM) 6 Update 4
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7

    4. The results from Jotti's Malware Scan:

    Nothing found on all scanners

    http://virusscan.jotti.org/en-gb/scanresult/b373f37d296ead59d99882972ada5605a63358b7

    5. I was not able to replace the file, "Access is denied, 0 files have been copied" so I have now stopped as requested.

P.s. when was I supposed to run the new version of ComboFix? or was that the last resort.

Ahhh okay. I did not notice that.

Right then, the file copy failed, and combofix is once again up and running so go back to the Read and Run Me First (refer to the information regarding the running of it) and download it to your desktop > Double click it to run it > and attach the C:\Combofix.txt log that it produces into your next reply. :)

    No Worries!

Right I have scanned again with ComboFix and my log is attached.

P.s. It had to restart windows as it said something like "ComboFix has dectected a rootkit, Windows needs to restart to complete the proces".

    thankyou for your help !

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    c:\windows\Ggoburogeh.dat
    c:\windows\Skurokimak.bin

    Fcopy::
    C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\dd9ab5193501484cf5e6884fa1d22f9e\ndis.sys | C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ndis.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\dd9ab5193501484cf5e6884fa1d22f9e\atapi.sys | C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\atapi.sys

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix.

Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now

Don't forget to install new Java.

Looking good anyway, let's just run one final tool to cover all bases before I give you final steps.

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -v

    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply.

    Ran the TDSKiller, Logs attached.

I also ran a full scan using Malwarebytes and it found 2 items in the sys restore. I have attached the Malwarebytes log for you. (I haven't removed them until you say so)

NOD32 also found the following (I assume these are the quarantined files from ComboFix):

    C:\System Volume Information\_restore{A8393674-085C-4723-B63E-39928C5F4C89}\RP12\A0006067.sys Win32/Protector.Gen virus

    C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ndis.sys.vir Win32/Protector.Gen virus

Thanks again, really appriciate your help

Correct. And the items it flagged in system restore will be dealt with and cleared away when you follow my final steps. Your logs are clean :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Hi there, ran a full scan with malwarebytes and it shows 3 items now. Logs attached. I haven't removed these yet, should I?

Hi there... those are just stuff in system restore and will be purged once you have ran my final steps when system restore is toggled ;)
