Last night the computer got infected with that AV Antivirus Suite. I knew it was malware, but I had no control of my desktop at all to run any anti-malware programs, so I switched to another user account, and downloaded Spywear Doctor. The program identified the malware, but when I got to the place where you are required to pay, I decided to go to bed because I didn't want to mess with my credit card at 4 in the morning.

This morning, the entire system was frozen. I tried a hard restart, and the computer won't even boot up.

I know the problem is that AV Antivirus Suite, but now I am afriad the entire things is toast.

Its a HP Laptop running Vista, 32 bit. I have Avast Antivirus, and I have three spyware programs that I run once a week, plus that one that is supposed to be always running in the background to prevent infections. I'm sorry that I don't remember the name of them now, but all of them were links from this site.

I am totally screwed if I lose this computer. Yes, I have backups, but I rely on both laptops for work since I work from home on the computer.

    Thanks.

You can try making this CD on a different computer and then boot your laptop to the disc:

    Kaspersky Rescue Disk.

I won't pretend to understand this, but when I restarted the computer again it gave the option of a system restore, which I did. But, oddly, when I restored, Spyware Doctor was active and blocked AV Antivirus Suite from reloading on my computer.

I don't know how that is possible, but I am glad.

I know the malware is hiding, and I'll try all the removal steps, but at least the computer boots up and is functional.

How come all Spybot and Avast didn't catch this one. I am totally, utterly obsessive about downloading updates and running scans.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Good to hear it is now booting.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this aother user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Okie Dokie. So, I did evertything up to the first two scans. The system kept shutting down when I ran SuperAntiSpyware, so I changed the scan like suggested and it ran fine and found a couple malware items. Then I ran the Malwarebytes and that found a few more.

Then my system started acting normal, so I ran my Spybot program, which previously had been causing shutdowns right in the middle of the registry scan, and now runs fine.

So, I stopped, because I think the malware must be gone.

But, I want to be sure. Is it reallly gone? Should I keep going in the process and post all the logs just in case I missed something?

Ooo I suppose regardless I should toggle the system restore and get rid of those viruses. Forgot that.

Yes, I need to see the requested logs:
    SAS
    MBAM
RootRepeal ( if it runs )
    ComboFix
    C:\MGLogs.zip
