infected issue: redirecting search to ads, pleasewaitclick.com, on a 64 bit OS

Discussion in 'Malware Help (A Specialist Will Reply)' started by pleasewaitclick-problem, Jan 7, 2010.

  1. Noticed the problem yesterday. Randomly my search clicks will get redirected to ads from various sites. Seems to hit pleasewaitclick.com while it decides to do this. A few people use this machine so i'm not exactly sure how it showed up. (i keep it clean 99% of the time and run my scans regularly. somebodys gonna get a stern talkin to once this gets fixed.)

Malwarebyte(log included) found and removed a bunch of trojans, yet the problem still remains after clean scans afterwards. i've also uninstalled and reinstalled firefox.

I've run ccleaner, superantispyware, malwarebytes-anti malware, spybot. attached are logs from super, malware and MGtools.

I'm on a 64 bit OS so no combobox or rootrepeal for me. Please help, i'm desperately lost at this point. This is a tricky sucker. Thanks in advance!

  3. Awesome! I figured with the whole 64 bit thing it throws out what look like a couple crucial programs. Thanks for your time, let me know if I need to provide anything else.

The below fixes and advice are specific to this member's problem and should be used for issue(s) on this machine only.

Hello, pleasewaitclick-problem, please do not install any other software while we are still working with you unless instructed. Once we have given you the all clean and final instructions you will be free to install what you want.

I strongly recommend that you clean up this account's Desktop immediately leaving only links.[ C:\Users\default.beast\Desktop ] Do not store downloads, exe files, iso files....etc on your Desktop. First it is not a safe place to keep them (i.e., you may loose them due to malware, and a cluttered Desktop is an easy hiding place for malware), and last but not least - it can have an effect on your PCs performance.

Question: Which browser is giving you re-directs? Does it happen with others?

    Some alternative browsers:

    Google Chrome 3.0.195.38 Final
    Mozilla Firefox 3 3.5.7
    Opera 10.10 Final

    Step 1:
Please look in Add/Remove Programs for the following and uninstall if found. If you get any errors just make a note and continue on.

    Step 2:
Download HostsXpert and then follow the below steps.

    • Unzip HostsXpert.zip
    • It will create a folder named HostsXpert in whatever folder you extract it to.
    • Run HostsXpert.exe by double clicking on it.
    • Click the Make Writeable? button. (if you only see a Make Read-Only selection, it is already writeable so skip this button).
    • Click Restore Microsoft's Hosts File and then click OK.
    • Click the X to exit the program

    Step 3:
Delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    Step 4:
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

    Step 5:
Now install the latest Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Step 6:
Please update both SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes > run "Quick scans" and attach the new logs.

    Step 7:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the below logs to your next reply:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
    • updated SASlog.txt
    • updated MBAM log

Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure and give a description of how things are working now!

  5. Firefox 3.5.7 was where i noticed the re-directs. Nothing in IE.
    - found that java update 12, uninstalled it. no errors. got new java again.
    - ran quick scan with malwarebytes, nothing found. log attached.
    - ran SUPERanti, nothing found. log attached.
    - attached are logs from MGtools as well.

Re-directs are still happening. I did everything listed in order, then restarted. Didn't have any hiccups along the way. Something else I should try?

    Please run the below scanner:
    Using ESET's Online Scanner

Then attach the ESETScan.txt to your next reply.

  7. Ok, so i ran ESET, the only problem it found was MGtools. I took note that firefox was the only place I was having the issue. So i made a backup of my bookmarks, noted the plugins I actually use and uninstalled it again. This time I removed all the folders and crap that remained. Restarted ran a bunch of scans, which found nothing. Reinstalled firefox, restored my bookmarks and reinstalled my plugins. It appears that the problem has been fixed. All searches so far show no evidence of trying to hit pleasewaitclick.com as it did often before. Thanks a lot of all your hard work and dedication to one individuals issue. Hopefully it can help others in the future.

You're welcome.. and "Thanks!" for posting your remedy for the unseen problem with FireFox.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double-click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
