Internet Explore Not Responding...Virus?

    Hello,
My computer was running with virtually no problems yesterday. I logged off like I usually do (switch user), and went to my friends house to help him move. When I returned, the computer was shut down, which is strange because I usually leave it in the switch user mode, and even if it is not powered on, as soon as I power it on it shows that people are logged on...just a quick way to get it up and running. Anyway, when I started it up, it seemed to run pretty slow, and Internet Explorer opens up like it's logging on, but it soon says Not Responding, and I can't get anything up on the webpages. It would seem to me that it is a virus, but I am running Avira Anti-virus, which I remember it updating yesterday, and I ran a complete scan today, and it didn't detect anything. I want to run the malware removal steps, but I can't get online to download any of the cleaners, programs, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions for me to run the steps? I am typing this from my laptop, but have no way of getting the files from this computer to my desktop. Please help!
I am running a self-built system (Aug. 07....no problems at all with system before this) with the following specs:

    Athlon 64 X2 4400 cpu
    Abit KN9 SLI AM2 motherboard
    G Skill DDR2 memory 2GB
    Windows Vista Ultimate Operating System

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I know if I could run the Malware Removal steps that it would work, because I've done it before on my old computer. Like I said, I can't get online to do that! Thanks for any help, suggestions, etc.

    Hello again,
I was able to run the diagnostics through the Read and Run This First thread, and I guess I'm supposed to post the logs here next. It doesn't appear to have made a log for the AVG program. I followed the instructions (using my laptop running the steps from this website as a guide) and when it told me to Save Report As, there wasn't anything there to save, therefore it wouldn't allow me to save anything. Anyway, I hope this helps. If you need anymore info, please let me know....I am about inept when it comes to this kind of thing, so please be gentle...I TRULY appreciate you guys and this site, even if I do get frustrated every now and then!

The log that you need to attach from MGtools is c:\MGlogs.zip as specified in the READ & RUN ME.

No it is incomplete. You must wait until all the scans are complete. Do not prematurely close the command prompt window. The MGtools download page shows you what the window looks like when the scans are finished.

I don't know what else to do.....I've just run the scans again and got THE SAME EXACT RESULT! NO report for the AVG scan....it found 23 items, but ALL were tracking cookies with a medium threat level, and even though it WAS set to QUARANTINE everything, the only option it gave me was to delete them, and then it didn't generate any log file. As for the MGtools, I once again followed it step for step, and got the exact same result again, which I posted, again! I can open it up and look at the log files, but I don't know what I'm looking at....I don't know why you can't see them....I don't know what else to do but wipe my hard drive and start over again. I should have listened to my brother and went with a MAC!

P.S. I just remembered.....on the MGtools scan, at the end of the scan, it said something like "scan complete....pressing any key will end the scan....press any key to continue". I let it go for a few minutes to make sure that it was done, and it did nothing until I pressed the spacebar, and then it generated the logfile that I posted. Hope this helps!

    Chaslang,
After opening the command page as you stated, and patiently clicking continue after every single "Windows needs your permission to continue" warning for what seemed like 5 minutes continually, it finally seemed like maybe I hadn't been patient enough the other times. Then, when I thought it was done, I got the following (copied word for word for the page)...

The system cannot find the file specified
    adding: runkeys.txt (172 bytes security) (deflated 83%)
zip warning: new zip file left as: C:zia11476
    zip I/O error: Permission denied
zip error: could not create output file (was replacing the original zip file)

Thats all I've got....it did spit out a runkeys.txt file that seemed to be alot longer than the other ones, but this is where I'm at now. Anything else you can tell me? I'm up for any suggestions at this point!

P.S. I also found a HiJackThis.log file that seems to have alot of info in it as well, but they don't seemed to be linked together. I found it by running a search from the run menu.

This instructions on the download page for Using MGtools explains all about how to deal with Vista. You apparently did not follow those instructions. You need to disable UAC as requested and you may need to use Run As Administrator when you run GetLogs.bat.

I did EXACTLY THAT each time I did it....that's what I'm trying to tell you! I disabled UAC and then I clicked on GetLogs.bat, and clicked Run as Administrator....I may be computerally challenged, but I'm not stupid! I can follow instructions.

I'm sorry but if those instructions are followed properly, the tools run just fine on Vista. It has been proven on hundreds of PCs. If you are getting popup warnings, it means that UAC is not disabled. Are you sure it is disabled? See the below link for other methods of disabling UAC.

Something is wrong....I followed the link below, and once again, DEFINITELY DISABLED UAC, ran the MGtools program again, with the same result. I am now uninstalling the MGtools program from my computer, and will download it again. I will try this one more time before I give up completely! At this point, I am ready to format the drive and wipe it clean....it SUCKS!!!!!!

Before I do that, I am going to post this one more time. When I was about to delete the MGtools.exe, I noticed that MGlogs.zip came up as well in the search.....anyway, I clicked on it to open it up, and presto.....there are ALL five files in there (Getunkey, hijackthis, newfiles, procdll, and runkeys). All seem to be text files except for hijackthis which is a log file. I HOPE and PRAY to God ALMIGHTY that this is what you need. If it is, like usual, I have NO IDEA what I did to get it! I certainly do appreciate your patience and understanding in putting up with me! On top of this computer driving me crazy, I have been down with a terrible chest and head cold the last few days....the fifth time this year I've had it! (I NEVER get sick this much....I swear they are spraying something in the air!). Anyway...I HOPE this works! I can't take much more tonight! Thanks again!

Okay it's great to fnally have the log file; however after all this trouble I have good news and bad news. The good news is you show no signs of malware. The bad new is also that you show no signs of malware and had to hassle with all of this to get logs.

What I do see in your log is that you had a system crash of the day where you said your PC shut down. The files from it are in your Windows folder.
    Code:

    "C:\Windows\"
    memory.dmp Dec 26 2007 431655653 "MEMORY.DMP"
    MINIDUMP Dec 26 2007 "Minidump"

You may want to consider posting in the Software Forum to see if they wish to debug the memory dump or if they have other ideas. Perhaps you should just try restoring to a restore point from before Dec 26th to see if that helps.
