    Hi,

It appears i've picked up the above infection, resulting in my PC running super slow and not letting me use Google etc whatsoever...total nightmare.

I've read and ran the Malware Removal checklist, however can't get the Kaspersky TDSSKiller link to work and therefore can't download and run it.

I've ran AFF cleaner and GooredFix (attached log..)

    Any help would be GREAT....

    thanks in advance

    Donald

You may not only have a ramnet infection. Let's gather more information. Are you able to complete three of these scans back to back which very quickly identifies a ramnet infection?

Run this and attach the results.

    Using ESET's Online Scanner

If not you need to work your way through these malware removal procedures.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Hi,
thanks for your quick response. So i tried running ESET's online - this came up with 'could not load page' both in Mozilla and Explorer.

I then ran through the 'malware removal guide' See attached logs. I managed to get all of the malware programs to work apart from Combofix - the links to this didn't work, coming up with 'could not load page' again in both Mozilla and Explorer.

Root Repeal worked up until an error came up 'Error - on disk corruption detected - run chkdsk' I've attached the log that was produced up until this error message in the next post.

    thanks again for your help

Yes you definately have a Ramnet infection in place which we can attempt to clean, and you may well have another infection too but I must post the usual warning:

This infection has really become quite nasty and dangerous. We could attempt to remove and have had some success in the past, but recently it has become even more trouble to remove. It is really safer to just bite the bullet and do a clean reinstall.

The problem is that the damage caused by this infection really makes a PC unreliable/untrustworthy. PE file infectors like Ramnit, Virut,.... etc are can infect all executable files (DLL, EXE, SCR....and many more and also HTML). These infections can open back doors that truly may compromise your computer and your security. These backdoors, could allow a remote attacker to access and instruct the infected computer to download and execute more malicious files.

In many cases the infected files (which could number in the thousands) cannot be disinfected properly by your anti-virus or by other scanning tools. Also when disinfection is attempted, the files often become corrupted and the system may become unstable or irrepairable. The longer Ramnit.A remains on a computer, the more files it infects and corrupts so the degree of infection can vary.

Ramnit is commonly spread via a flash drive (usb, pen, thumb, jump) infection where it copies Worm:Win32/Ramnit.A with a random file name. The infection is often contracted by visiting remote, crack and keygen sites. These type of sites are a major source of system infection.

So all the above being said, and please do take serious note of the warnings, do you really wish to attempt cleaning even though the stability and security of your be cannot be guaranteed? And also, we could spend a lot of time trying to fix it and still fail due to the number of files that have been infected.

    • Registry Mechanic 4.0 <--- uninstall
    • RegTweaker version 3.2.2.1 <--- uninstall
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 11 <--- uninstall outdated java.
    • Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus 8.0 <--- If this is just a trial, which is useless anyway, then uninstall it.
Are you set up to use the below proxy?

If not include it in our fixables below.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

NOTE: HJT may popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    Download and run OTM.

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

    Code:

    • Push the large http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2782/4174320048_f01c448b32_o.png button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it into notepad, save it as something appropriate and attach it into your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and attach the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Try this link to TDSSKiller, try and run it, and explain any difficulties you may have.

I want you to run TDSSKiller so refer to the below for how to do so.

    TDSSkiller - How to run

Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    Try the ESET scan again!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    Hi,

O.k followed your instructions. I couldn't get the links to TDSSkiller and ESET to work. Again i got a 'page load error' with both.

No problems otherwise. Attached is the MGlogs zip.

    cheers

I am sorry but I believe the best path for you to take now is to reformat and start afresh. This machine is infested. :(

    board Private E-2

Thats unfortunate. I guess i'll go for the reformat...

Excuse my lack of knowledge, but how exactly do i do that?? Can i make backups of stuff on my PC (like photos/music etc?) or is it best to bin the lot? Also, i've got an external hard drive....will that be o.k??

I'm not sure if you're able to locate where the infection is...and therefore advise what i need to reformat. I've got 2 separate internal hard drives and one external.

    cheers

    Donald

I have had a bit of a rethink. Let's have another pop at a fix and then I can review the logs and see what's what.

Java(TM) 6 Update 11 <<< You still did not uninstall outdated java.

    • F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,,C:\Program Files\tffoyhfb\dwvypwre.exe

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    Download and run OTM.

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

    Code:

    :reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon]
    "Userinit"="c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,"

    C:\Program Files\tffoyhfb
    C:\Documents and Settings\hansom\Local Settings\Application Data\dmwskjtn.log
    mhtosoqu.log
    qqaukliq.log
    sjqrwkmt.log
    wxjhctmr.log
    C:\_NIM4711.TMP

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.

Try and run TDSSKiller again, try and download it from this in house link.

    TDSSK

Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

Also tell me what software ID'd Ramnet in the first place. Does it still detect it now? (One look at the logs will let me know whether we have made progress or not anyway)

    Hi,

o.k, tried to get rid of Java....couldn't manage it...I tried if through Control Panel - add/remove and got the message along the lines of...cannot delete files as the below applications are currently using it - jqs.exe. If you would like to close this application and continue to uninstall click O.K..... I clicked O.k. this was then followed by an error screen - 'Fatal error during installation'. I click o.k and Java remains....

Apart from that, all else o.k....attached are the OTM and MGlogs files. TDSSK worked and found nothing....

    Thanks for having a rethink..

The below line is still showing so let's not get too excited yet :(

Are you now able to access the ESET scanner?

Some files did not get deleted because my script was incorrect but this is just a minor annoyance....Ramnet is still in place.

Time for the reinstallation I am afraid.

Well there in lies the problem with Ramnit. It can infect many many files. Mostly executable types which could include DLL and SYS files ( drivers ). You should however backup all personal data you need and before you ever restore said personal data to a reinstalled ( or even another PC ) make sure that you fully scan it with ESET or similar other scanners to make sure it is clean.

    O.k....well re-install it is....:(

How exactly do i do that? not ever had to take things this far before.....

thanks for trying your best to get rid of it!...i guess sometimes is just too well rooted in...

You can ask about this in the software forum. Yes, sorry it was not good news I had to give you but this really is the safest decision to make where Ramnet is involved. :)
