A number of my .AVI & .flv files appear to be corrupted.

What happens is that sections of these files appear to be getting corrupt somehow. When I go to play them on any media player, it hits a bad spot and then skips back to the beginning of the clip. This is annoying as heck. I have to use the time advance tab to move past the bad sections. Sometimes I miss out on large sections of the file.

I later found and read an article by Hakin9 (2009 issue)
It stated along the lines that a hacker monitors a user say a music file and wants to download it.
While the user is downloading a music file online, the hacker then injects a virus.
Once the download is complete, the user ends up with a corrupted music file.

    Fast forward January/February 2010,
Many Internet users download files created by other people, and some of us do know that some of these files can have viruses.

while I was downloading Windows Media Player ver 11, everything was fine until Zone Alarm detected 3 viruses.
I installed Media Player 11. While installing it hangs a bit (over a minute). After complete installation, I wanted to view a video file & it works fine, but things on my PC was behaving oddly.
    I then uninstalled Media 11.

I then surfed the web a bit.

After finished viewing the web, I noticed one of my files with a ~$ on my desktop.

I went to check on the properties & noticed S-1-5-21-x-x-x-1006 with a red ? next to the user profile.

    I used Malwarebytes & it detected a trojan on C:\System Volume Information\_restore{2A3E95A9-2A43-4590-BD4C-1D3199E80310}\RP###\A00#####.xxx

every time I used malwarebytes, it detected a trojan on C:\Sys Vol Info\_restore{}...

    soln: system restore delete!

Lately, I noticed a hacker somewhere was monitoring my PC online.
If I download anything like an application or video file over 10MB, within 1 sec after complete downloading, there would seem to be a Trojan Horse & Stealth Virus somewhere on my PC!

Somehow Dr. Web gave me a BSoD when I ran a scan using Malwarebytes.
    BSod displayed a Stop 0x50.
I used BlueScreenView, it stated that there was a memory address error in Spider.sys in Dr. Web

I deleted Dr. Web. No more BSod & Malwarebytes detected no more viruses.

I looked into AVG 8 & 9 Web Shield online, most users complained that it slowed down the internet speed & caused other problems.

    Soln: completely uninstall AVG 8 & 9.

I am looking for a best recommended and tested with positive reviews and can be downloaded for free with free updates
an anti-virus checker allows you to scan the file during downloading, it scans the file automatically - catch it as it is downloading!

If one wants to purchase Dr. Web, you pay in Euros ( not mention how much in US $), but does it work flawlessly? Hmmm...

Has anyone on this forum recently used Dr. Web to scan for any viruses while downloading and was able to capture & delete it successfully?

Also is there a way from being detected online by a hacker using a single home PC?

In this tough economy hackers are constantly upgrading old viruses & methods of deploying them online without detection.

    Enough is enough.
I just wanted to be left alone, be able to surf & download online safely without any hackers and without any viruses & use my PC.

    This is NOT a joke.

Yes, at best... at worst there could be slightly more being injected. Downloading files from unknown sources is always a dodgy affair.

Yes, p2p applications such as Limewire are a great way to get infected.

And what software was detecting those?
All topic for the software forum. We deal with removing malware here as that keeps us busy enough so any questions you may have after we have finished regarding av's can be discussed elsewhere.

again, subject for the software forum where other users can imput their opinions on various protection software.

A good anti virus and a third party firewall should keep you nice and safe. However, common sense is also very much at play when it comes to keeping you and your machine protected.

Indeed. Malware is always evolving..changing... it's like a continue game of chase.

Please follow through our complete malware removal procedures which I shall link to below for reference if you wish for me to thoroughly check for any remaining baddies.

    Indeed it isn't.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.
