    hey guys and gals,

this is the first tyime I've had trouble finding whats wrong with my PC. and to be honest, I dont really know whats going on.

at times my hard-drive is spinning so fast it sounds like it's about to blow up, and something is acessing my net and using up all of my bandwidth. CPU usage is through the roof, and RAM is being used at 85% while idling.

it all started when I mounted an ISO and ran a setup file if that helps. I had scanned the ISO with kaspersky 2011, and malwarebytes before opening it. both had said it was clean. The ISO did come from a p2p source though.

Also, my hotmail was recently hijacked and mass-mails were sent from it without my authorization, causing hotmail to freeze my account. and my passord no longer works on some websites now, leading me to believe there is a key-logger as well on my system.

I tried running hijackthis in normal mode, but it would not let me save the log file, I had to run hijackthis from safemode just to get this log for you guys.

    HELP!!! lol

    Thanks,
    Nick

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this aother user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Ok, apolgize for posting the HJT log, it's my first time asking for help here obviously :) lol.

I went through your list of pre-help things to do.

I got as far as updating my java, i downloaded the current version as linked on this site, but when I went into my add/remove programs (Vista 32) theres was no java present at all, but I know that there is java on my system.

i even tried searching for the file in Start>search, but nothing showed up excluding the update I just downloaded.

shall I continue with the list, or is there a problem here?

    Thanks,
    Nick

As the instructions state, if something doesn't work, move on and let us know. So please just continue on with the process. ;)

    a few points..

with malwarebytes, I accidently ran quickscan the 1st time, it detected something, which was quarantined and removed. so I ran the full scan the next day as it was late at night, nothing found. I included the full scan as instructed here, but can attach the log from the quick scan with the 1 found object if requested to do so.

with MGtools, I tried to scan as instructed, by clicking file, selecting all drives, and performing the scan. When I clicked file, my only option was "Exit" no other options. So I clicked the large square button on the main interface that had "scan" written on it and attached that log.

I am not seeing any malware in your logs. As far as your email account is concerned, you will have to clean that out yourself. You can make a new folder and move only the emails that you know are not the cause of your issues. Then delete the old folder and all of its contents.

You can barely run Vista with only this amount of RAM:
    Code:
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 512 MB
    Total Physical Memory 446 MB
    Available Physical Memory 82.8 MB
You should have a minimun of 2gb installed!!

Tell me what issues are remaining.

yes, I only have the basics in the Pc for now until I get everything sorted on it, I picked it up for free.. AMD athlon 1.85Ghz on an Msi-7050 ver. 1.3 mobo, nothing special, but worth the price..

it already had vista and a few things on it when I picked it up, and I assumed it had malware on it, as do most free computers..

I will upgrade the RAM to 2gb this week and report if there are still any problems.. I do tend to worry too much, and if it's just the RAM, I really apologize for wasting your precious time..

Thanks for your advice Tim, I appreciate the help :)

    Take care,
    Nick

You are most welcome. And don't worry about my time. It is never a waste of time to check your computer for malware.

You can go to crucial.com and have it scan your system to see how much RAM the motherboard will hold.

Do feel free to come back to this thread if you have any more concerns or have questions.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0

    Hello again :)

First and foremost, I'd like to say that I have a newfound respect for what you guys do here. I've read through most of the threads here and alot of the stuff you guys have to deal with here, and I'm amazed that you guys can even stay composed sometimes without beating your head against your desk.

That being said, I borrowed a 1G chip from a friend to try it out in my PC, and CPU usage and mem usage was instantly back to a more normal range..

I'm thinking windows has a GIANT paging file on my HD, and that was bogging everything down.. I will have to check that out and possibly shrink it once I get my own RAM.

and as for my hotmail, after much pondering and thinking, the only conclusion I could come up with is my use of a public library computer a few months ago. I rememebr i checked my email at the library waiting for my nephews to hurry up. and thats roughly around the same time period that my hotmail was hijacked.

So I guess this is goodbye for now, I'm sure I will run into something that needs investigating in the future, and until then, take care of yourself Tim, and many thanks. :)

    Best Regards,
    Nick
