    Right. Here goes.

Last night I was sitting at my PC, just with iTunes open playing music nothing else running. Suddenly my PC restarted. Then just chain restarted non-stop until I turned it off.

Eventually I managed to get into a steady Safe Mode. Ran the cmd AVG scan, ran a Spybot S&D scan and a Malware Bytes scan. None of these picked up anything bar a couple of bad cookies. After that I just got past the logon screen on the next startup and was left with a black screen and mouse cursor. Whether it was Safe Mode or Normal startup.

Managed to get into the startup repair and tried the auto repair which achieved nothing, so went for a system restore back a couple of days. It claimed it was succesful so I went for another restart.
Loaded up the desktop. One strange thing was the mouse cursor would start in the centre of the screen like normal, then skip to the top left corner...
Anyway, after leaving it for a couple of minutes to make sure it was stable I managed to jump on here, and started going through the Read Me Malware Removal guide.

Downloaded all the applicable programs. However, I can't run any of them. I installed them all fine, when I go to run them it just blue screens every time. Same with AVG. I can run Firefox that's about the only application I've tried.

I'm a reasonably advanced user but can't seem to get my head around this. Perhaps a web-based scan? Attached a HJT log as well.

    PC spec is:
    Intel Core2 Duo E4800
    6GB DDR2 Ram
    ATi HD5770
    Windows 7 64bit

EDIT: Added the first MWB scan log. The rest since then have been clean but the problem still persists.

What happens when you try to run MGTools.exe? Have you tried running the scans in safe mode? Did you attempt to run them with the programs renamed?

When I run MGTools I get the same as the others. Lock up followed by BSOD.

Tried them all in safe mode and only MWB worked. The others BSOD/Force restart (depending on whether I've got restart on serious error enabled).

Tried renaming them also. Doesn't seem to be tracking the application names. Just doesn't let it scan. Might be a specific file it hits during the scan that it dislikes? Then again, it was right at the start of the scan.

I can get into the programs. Just can't scan. Aside from ComboFix and MGtools.

So let me understand, you are getting BSOD's in both normal and safe mode? And when you try to run either Combo or MGTools it BSOD's on you before it completes the scans?

Do you think you can run an online scan> eSet Online Scan.

If not, you may need to try to do this:

Take the hard disk out and scan it in another well protected PC.
Use another PC to make a special CD which you can boot from to try and run virus and spyware scans or to at least backup data. CDs like the below:

But more than likely, you need to post in the software forum to try to solve the BSOD issue before we can do any malware cleaning.

Well I was getting BSODs in both. But after I got back into Safe Mode it seemed ok with MWB and AVG. I System restored after I got BSOD from safe mode the first time. The restore didn't affect me getting BSOD in normal mode. It's a real hit and miss to get back in once it turns off as well. Sometimes I'll get chain BSODs (same as the chain restarts but without the restart option on..) and then some other times it'll just load up fine.

I'll try MGtools again. Will that just produce logs of what's on the system? Or will it remove threats as well?

MGTools will produce C:\MGLogs.zip which will have a number of logs that will tell us what is on your system. It will not remove anything. But it is an extremely helpful tool to see what is going on in your system.

Not sure if I forgot to say before I can use the computer in a reasonably stable state once I get in.

Also another point worth mentioning, I think the original problem was in Google Chrome. I use it now and again for a few specific things. I found that uninstalling it reduced the crashes to begin with. Also tried reinstalling but as soon as I opened it, I got a forced restart or BSOD. That's 100% of the time as well. Firefox and IE work fine.

Just ran MGTools. Log is attached. Not sure whether to give SuperSpyware a try again?

First off, I am not seeing any malware in your logs. However, you probably can't run Combo because you have TeaTimer running as well as AVG installed.

I can only suggest that you post in the software forum to diagnose the BSOD issues. You need to not have it restart on errors so you can include the error code in the BSOD.

EDIT: Further developments..... Turns out I can't uninstall anything. I just got a popup on firefox. Had a couple throughout the night not too regular. Links to one page then redirects to another random one. At the same time the popup came up Sun Java Microsystems logo came up in the taskbar area too... then disappeared.

Windows installer comes up... then goes to an error "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation packed "jre 1.6.0_18-c-l.msi" in the box below". Then a text entry box with a browse feature.

Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!

Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.4.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.

    • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
    • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it. To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123tdk.com).
    • Click the Start Scan button.
    • Do not use the computer during the scan
    • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
    • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
    • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
    • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_14.17.05_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory ( usually Local Disk C ).
    • Attach this log to your next message

I disabled TeaTimer and AVG active shields/protection before I tried running any of the programs in the Read through. They're just re-enabled now because I'm doing other things.

Just ran TDSS tool. It found a false drive (?) and a locked file. Rebooted and started up first time. Still get the weird thing with the cursor jumping to the top left of the screen which never used to happen. Also my keyboard multimedia buttons stopped working when this first happened yesterday and still don't work.

Shall I try installing Chrome again? Although I do risk getting stuck in the BSOD loop again....

Please attach the TDSSKiller log so I can see what it found.

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...

    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:

    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message.

Good, TDSSKiller found a bunch of problems including your MBR. It is now clean. Tell me if you are still being redirected.

Your other issues will probably be best worked in the software forums. Esp all the BSOD's you are having.

    Did you uninstall Chrome?

  18. benjaminosauras

    benjaminosauras Private E-2

    Ah right.

I'll have to wait and see for the redirect popups. They weren't overly regular.

Yeh I uninstalled Chrome. However it didn't ever do it properly.

The uninstaller crashed, then removed itself from the uninstall list and the program has disappeared from Program Files. I have a feeling there's still stuff lurking in UserData and the registry from it though. I don't know enough to go hunting around however.

It did the same thing both times I uninstalled it. Didn't give me the "network resource" error that I'm getting from everything else now though.

Run CCleaner, both the cleaner and the registry ( make the backup when prompted ). That should clean out any leftovers.

If you ran MGTools in safe mode ( I forget at the moment ), then re-run it in normal mode and attach the new log. If it was run in normal mode, then please use IE and run the Eset online scan.

    ESET results attached.

Is that discovery major? Or just a small spyware piece?

All it found was a false positive about MGTools. It did not find any true malware. So keep going in your software thread.

Since you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
