May still be infected

I came to your site a couple of days ago and got some great help finding and clean my computer which was infected. I did all the steps in the Read and run lists except for the McGtools as this was listed as having problems and to skip it at the time. I am still having problems with pages freezing and not loading when I am on the net. I posted about this in the software forum and was told to repost here because I may be reinfected. The problems only happen when I am on the web using either IE or Firefox. The problem is sporatic not occurring with every page. I have waited up to 10 minutes for pages to load when going to sites like ebay and ehow, with no luck. Sometimes I can go back or refresh the page to get it to come up. Other times even that won't work. Also I get messages when I shut down my machine that certain programs are not responding such as, windows.exe and taskbar. I have had to click end now to get the machine to shut down. Before posting here I went back to redo the Read and run list but when I tried to download the Combofix it said to turn off my AVG virus scanner and I don't see a choice for doing that. I right clicked on the AVG icon on the taskbar and the only choices are Open the user interface and Update now. The user interface page doesn't have any option for shutting the program down. I am afraid to go online and get any of my tax information or banking info until I am sure the computer is clean.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this aother user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

I re-ran all the steps in the read and run first list and just tried to go to ehow. I still have pages freezing up and not loading completely. I attached my logs below and in the next post. Thanks for your help. When I removed all the quaranteed items in Super Anti Spyware from when I ran it before this last scan. Right when I clicked on "remove" on one of the items a warning box from AVG popped up saying a virus was detected and did I want AVG to remove it. I clicked on yes, but later when I checked the virus vault in AVG nothing was there.

Sorry it is taking so long. Even the pages here are taking longer to load and I keep having to refresh or go back. Here are the other two logs.
Well I tried to find and download them. I can see the SASlog.txt listed in C, but when I try to download it an error message comes up saying it has already been downloaded on this thread. I cannot find the mbam. txt file dated with todays date only the earlier one from on the 19th. I can tell you that both scans today said that no infections were found. I can open each program and go to the logs. They are listed as being in Notepad. I don't see a program listing under C when I use browse for Notepad, to be able to open it up.

I was finally able to get both of those other logs sent to my desktop and they are attached. I did not have any programs to hang when I closed my computer down last night except for Super-Anti Spyware for a short while. It closed itself for the shutdown.

You do need to double the amount of RAM that you have:
    Total Physical Memory 512.00 MB
    Available Physical Memory 171.45 MB

    Let's do this though:

Please double-click the RootRepeal.exe previously downloaded.

    * Select File then Scan
    * On the Select Drives form select drive C by "ticking" the box for drive C and click OK
    * When the scan is complete - highlight each of the following file(s) (one at a time if more then one is listed) by left clicking it. Then use right mouse click and select the Wipe File option only for each file.
    c:\documents and settings\jennifer s\local settings\temp\~df48ea.tmp
    c:\documents and settings\jennifer s\local settings\temp\~df4f6c.tmp
    c:\documents and settings\jennifer s\local settings\temp\~df8ed1.tmp
    c:\documents and settings\jennifer s\local settings\temp\~dff22a.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jennifer S\Local Settings\temp\~DF1477.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jennifer S\Local Settings\temp\~DF4F6C.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jennifer S\Local Settings\temp\~DF8ED1.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jennifer S\Local Settings\temp\~DFDFAD.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jennifer S\Local Settings\temp\~DFDFC5.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jennifer S\Local Settings\temp\~DFE058.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jennifer S\Local Settings\temp\~DFE071.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jennifer S\Local Settings\temp\~DFE192.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jennifer S\Local Settings\temp\~DFE1A9.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jennifer S\Local Settings\temp\~DFF22A.tmp
    * After Wiping all files, immediately reboot your pc!

Now tell me what issues you are having.

I ran the RootRepeal scan three times. I assumed that where you said to click on "file" you meant the "files" tab at the bottom like I did before. The first scan only showed one file: C:\System Voume Information\_restore(C08DA31-A-B748-4BDB-AD02-84CBB2... . With a Status of Visable to the Windows API,b.
The next two times I ran it that same file did not come up instead there were three others shown in the attached download of the log. None of the files you listed came up to wipe. I am still having the same problems with pages not loading, pages freezing, and long wait times. Again it is only happening when I am on the net and the IE part of the page up top and the bottom task bar does not freeze up. I can refresh and use the back button to get off the locked up pages.

Ok.....then just check that those files in your temp folders are deleted.

You need to post back in the software forum to continue to diagnose your internet problems. ( I might suggest that you totally disable Norton and see if that makes a difference.)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
