    Hello,

I require some help please with some system instability resulting from a recent and possibly ongoing Malware infection:

    Background:

A month ago I encountered a "(bogus anti-virus name here) 2009" virus which was among the toughest I ever dealt with and caused enough system instability for me to have to run dskchk in DOS to even be able to log on as I kept getting a (possible bogus) blue death screen every time Windows loaded.

After this comp ran problem free until just last night when I once again got infected with the same type of virus...this one calling itself the 2010 version. After running AVG, AVAST! and finally MalwareBytes the later appears to have removed it.

However I am now getting the most bizarre behaviours I have ever experienced in the wake of an infection including:

    Symptoms:
    • Control Panel would not load from anywhere but command prompt for some time-now seemingly resolved.
    • IE will not load in any way and although I can see the IEProxy.dll file when I hunt for it the comp claims the module cannot be located so I can’t re-register as MS.com suggests.
    • Various programs now not working and these will now not reinstall.
    • Both HP scanner and OS required original disks inserted to reset settings… I guess.
    • Word had to go thru the installation process when I tried to open it.
    • Various other small bugaboos going on…for instance before IE went down the homepage kept setting itself to Google.

    System:

    Windows XP

I do not know if this is all a result of the original virus or if an anti virus scan removed some vital components? I know Avast ran in boot mode on its recommendation…first time I encountered a scan wanting to do this but I watched it and it prompted me before removing anything.

I have not done any messing around with regkeys so I am out of ideas. System is currently relatively stable but again any of these program issues remain as does the IE issue.

Any help with be greatly appreciated and I can supply the Hijack this log I just wanted to ask first if that is allowed.

    Thank you in advance.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:
    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.
