    Need professional virus support

Although I am computer literate, compared to the true geeks I’m just not in your league. I also have the beginnings of dementia and that adds to problem. My wife’s Acer One computer running XP has the Windows security alerts virus. Apparently some of the steps that I have taken have removed most of the threat. What is left is the shield (red shield w/white cross) down by the clock. It no longer keeps popping things up but the shield is still there and it causes some function combinations to not work.
So if anyone can recommend a confidential and secure help company that could log in and fix this I would appreciate it. The only other option is divorce or suicide. John

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this aother user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    TimW,

Well I didn’t have any problems downloading and running all you requested. Weather I did it properly or not is yet to be determined.
I still have the Windows Security Alerts shield down by the clock and it still (at startup) tells me that my computer might be at risk. I think that is interfering with some of my function combination keys but I can’t be sure that it isn’t something else. Since it is my wife’s computer I don’t know what she was doing or when. It is not for me to reason why, it’s just for me to do or die.
I hope the logs I’m sending helps us (meaning you) figure out how to rid me of this fiasco. Ether way I want to let you know how much your help means to me.

    Thank you,

    John Wood

I am using Malwarebytes (1.46)Superantispyware Professional (436.1006) and Sygate (5.6)for a firewall but in the instructions it told me to disable SAS and Sygate?

    TimW,

Well, after you said that you couldn’t see any Anti Virus program that I was running and after replying with what I was running I started to think about it. Doing some research on MajorGeek I came to the conclusion that I wasn’t running any AV software. So I downloaded PC Tools AntiVirus free edition and am running it on the computer now. I am running a full scan so it will take hours to complete but it has found one threat and two infections so far and the Windows security Virus shield is gone. So I think that we have found the problem and I is it. Of course I won’t be completely sure until it finishes running but it’s looking good.
This is all due to your kindness in having the patients’ and the helpful nature to care enough about other people. So I may be ahead of myself, But I formally thank you and MajorGeek for your logical brain and time.

    John

Yes, having an AV program installed is the first step!! Make sure you keep it updated as SAS and MBAM are good AS programs, not AV programs. :)
