    hello everyone,

sorry if my title is not helpful..I actually do not know what is wrong and I think I have a virus. For the last 2 days I couldnt use my laptop at all. Luckily when I ran it in safe mode with networking, I was able to get online, check my emails, etc.... but my mouse cursor didnt work at all in either modes.

I downloaded ATF Cleaner and luckily figured out how to use shortcuts to run it in Safe mode today. After running it, deleting all files, and then rebooting in normal Windows XP mode, my mouse worked! But I still cannot use the internet...it keeps freezing.

I downloaded Sysclean with the newest Trend Micro System patch lpv$vpn.716, which is running right now.

I then downloaded HiJack This from Trend micro and ran it...

PS- I use Avast free antivirus for my laptop....

    My issues:

    1. Everytime I try to sign into www.hotmail.com my screen is completely blank. I see absolutely nothing and therefore cant check my email. Every other site seems to be ok.

    2. System a bit slow and internet freezes in "Regular" Microsoft XP Mode

If someone could analyze my HJT, that would be great. Here it is:

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Hello Kestrel13,

Thanks for your assistance. I followed the instructions you provided in Safe Mode with Networking, as my computer freezes whenever I try to run any program in Normal mode. Also, I have 32bit Windows XP Home Edition.

I forgot to mention in my last post, but I was and still am getting an error message that windows cannot find the following, whenever I boot in normal mode:
    c:\windows\inf\other.exe

When I ran ComboFix, I had disabled my Avast program, but CF kept saying it was active. I ran Combofix anyway....

I was unable to run MG Tools... I downloaded it as instructed, clicked on the MG Tools file and got a folder with many other files in it. The instructions said the scanning should begin automatically, but that was not the case for me.. not sure why..

Anyway, I am attaching the logs that I do have and I thank you in advance for all your assistance!!!

    Happy Holidays,
    Mab615

I can see malware to get rid of, but I would like to be sure about MGTools. Go to C:\MGTools.exe and double click it to run it. If successful then please attach the C:\MGlogs.zip.

    Hi Kestrel,

I double clicked on the .exe file and all that happens is my monitor quickly flashes black with some white writing. It all disappears too quickly to read any of it...:confused

Yes, but have you got a C:\MGlogs.zip? :confused

No...I don't see any .zip files on my C:\ at all...

All I have is the superman icon for MG Tools.exe, and a regular MG Tools folder... I don't see any logfiles there, either...

    Rename MGTools.exe to magpie.com

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    • F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\inf\Other.exe
    • F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\Win.exe
    • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [dc2k5] C:\WINDOWS\SVIQ.EXE
    • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Fun] C:\WINDOWS\system\Fun.exe
    • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [dc] C:\WINDOWS\dc.exe
    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Registry::
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "dc2k5"=-
    "Fun"=-
    "dc"=-
    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\inf\Other.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\Win.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SVIQ.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\dc.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system\Fun.exe

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop

    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor.
    • Allow the application to run and a window will open showing that it is TDSSkiller from Kaspersky
    • Click Start scan
    • It will run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Run C:\magpie.com and if you are successful this time then attach the C:\MGlogs.zip into your next reply.

Otherwise, if it really did not work after the rename, then follow through with the below:

    Download OTL to your desktop.

    • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
    • Vista and Windows 7 users Right-click OTL and choose Run as Administrator)
    • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
    • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
    • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

Attach both of these logs into your next reply.

Ok, so before I followed your instructions, I rebooted into Normal Windows and didn't get the usual error message I mentioned before. AND windows didn't freeze...which is great. I wonder if it has to do with the fact that I uninstalled Avast...which I plan on reinstalling shortly.

So in Normal Windows XP Home Edition mode, I ran the Hijack this and none of the items you listed came up in the results field, so I didn't fix anything.

I am attaching the Combofix log that generated after I added the script text, as you advised.

The TDS killer found no threats..see attached log.

Also, "Magpie" renaming worked..woohooo! Log attached...

Thanks for your help and I'm looking forward to the next steps! ;-)

No, more than likely it's gone because we fixed the malware that was causing the message.

    That's great!

    Rename Magpie.com.exe back to MGTools.exe

Tell me how things are running because the logs look good and I think you will be ready for final steps soon. :)

Things seem to be running well... I even managed to sign into Hotmail using Internet Explorer and Firefox in Normal mode, whereas before neither worked properly and only Firefox was working ok in safe mode.

I also just renamed Magpie to MGTools, so I think I'm ready for the final steps!:-D

    Okay then. :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
