Norton's working overtime and google doesn't obey my will...

    Hi,

    Okay I'll start off by saying that my computer is an old Dell laptop (she's pink and shiny and before now did everything I needed her to) and I run windrows XP. My problems started about two weeks ago and they are many. I shall enumerate them (I like lists)

    1. Norton keeps popping up all proud for blocking an attack from Tidserv activity (sometimes, it's Tidserv Activity 2). I am, obviously, happy that norton seems to be doing something, but this is happening... I don't know, every 2 minutes? It's old. I have updated norton run a billion scans, but it finds nothing.

    2. Sometimes google takes me places I don't want to be. When I'm looking for dragon age walkthrough help and it's NOT GIVING IT TO ME, I get a little cranky.

    3. Slooooooooooooooooooooooooooow when this starts happening. Eventually, IE just stops working. Once I restart, it's good until it starts all over again - usually I can get in about 20 minutes of computer use before it all goes crap.

    4. This weird thing happens where windows stops looking right. The start button at the bottom goes from green to grey and all of the title bars suddenly have sharp corners instead of rounded. I am pretty sure that's what they used to look like back when the world was young and I had an even older version of windows.

    5. In my increasing funny looking-ness, sometimes, usually after windows has gone odd looking, IE will get really weird looking. There will be a black or sometimes open (where I can see my wallpaper through it) bar under the navigation bar and the words in my tool bars will all be blurry and superimposed over themselves but just a little off.

    6. I tried running tdsskiller, like the internets told me to, and it wouldn't install. I even changed it's name to sometime as benign as i could, possibly even involving puppies and flowers, and it would NEVER install past 80%. It stalled every time at exactly 80%

    So, Now I'm here. I did everything I was told, so if you've got words of wisdom for my poor little computer, I will be eternally grateful.

    Thanks,
    Jojo

    I want you to run TDSSKiller so refer to the below for how to do so.

    TDSSkiller - How to run

    (Yes I know you tried before but this is a newer version) :)

    It... seems to have worked. It ran. It found badness. It fixed badness. And now, it's been a little while and I've been using my computer like a computer and there has been no further badness.

    A little remains, let's finish off.

    Uninstall the below outdated Java.

    Java(TM) 6 Update 19
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7

    Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    DirLook::
    c:\documents and settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\{6D6AC1A4-8AD1-4F11-8180-84300C315972}
    Folder::
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\XoftSpySE
    File::
    c:\windows\Itefacepex.bin
    c:\windows\Iyeyuz.dat
    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{AFBCB7E0-F91A-4951-9F31-58FEE57A25C4}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{AFBCB7E0-F91A-4951-9F31-58FEE57A25C4}]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

    Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.
