    Greetings,
The main issue I am having is that the computer freezes / not responding in normal mode everytime you try to start a program. Sometimes it takes 5 seconds to freeze sometimes a few minutes. One the computer enters into the non responding mode you have to unplug and take the battery out to get a reboot. In safe mode there are no issues with freezing. I did notice a program running that was a known trojan, so that is why I did the malware cleaning steps and created the requested logs. I did not see where any of the programs found any malware during the scans. I did have to run all of the utilities under safe mode. All of them seemed to work OK - there were no error messages during the downloads or scans. I hope I did everything correctly as I tried to follow the instructions.
Thanks so much for taking a look,
    Bill

Are you looking in the right place? It is not in the MGtools folder. It is in the root folder. C:\MGlogs.zip

Sorry about that - I was obviously looking in the wrong spot.

    Thanks,

It does not look like you are having malware problems. All of your logs are clean. However let's do the below to scans just to cover all bases.

Goto the below link and follow the instructions for running TDSSKiller from Kaspersky
    • Be sure to attach your log from TDSSKiller

Now please also download MBRCheck to your desktop.

See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

The two logs you requested are attached.

    Thank you!

Hello there. From the logs you have provided I am not seeing any malware. But then they were run in SAFE mode. So the only thing I can suggest is that you run a few scans in NORMAL mode if at all possible. Let's do this first though:

AVG Free 9.0 <--- This is outdated, you should consider upgrading to the current version or switch to another anti virus, perhaps Microsoft Security Essentials.

    Java(TM) 6 Update 6 <--- Uninstall, outdated.

    Delete this folder.
    c:\users\Cathie\AppData\Local\BIT8CE5.tmp

Now, in NORMAL mode please run the following (If possible)
    • SUPERantispyware
    • Malware Bytes
    • Combofix
    • MGTools
    Then attach their logs.

    Hey,
Thanks for the response - the only thing you suggested that I could get to work was deleting the folder c:\users\Cathie\AppData\Local\BIT8CE5.tmp

It would not let me update the AVG nor would it let me delete the Java update.

I am running in safe mode as this is the only way to keep the computer running. My machine will boot in normal, but as soon as you ask it to execute any command or program it just freezes up and you have to take the battery out to get a reboot. It will just stay in some type of suspended mode until you take away the power..... I will try any other suggestions you have.

    thanks again for the help,
    Bill

It does not matter anyway as these are not the source of your problems. And neither is malware according to all of your logs which are clean.

I suggest that you try performing a System Restore to a date before the problem began.

Or if the above does not work, try repairing Windows from the Recovery Environment of Vista.

Both of the above suggestions are things you should work on in the Software Forum.

I very much appreciate the help. I will move over to the software forum for advice on how to correct the problems.

    Best regards,
    Bill

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required (If we renamed it please rename it back to Combofix.exe.
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
