More than likely! :) As to your threads title, what are you trying to find out? There are different types of modems, dialup and ethernet/broadband. Do you have a phone line attached to your computer, or is it attached to an external modem with an ethernet cable?

Most modems have two jacks. All ethernet cards have one jack. Ethernet jacks are bigger than modem phone jacks. Go buy an ethernet cat5 cable at your local PC store (they even have 'em at the dollar store near my house). If you have a single jack device in the rear of your PC, try to plug the ethernet cable into it. If it fits, you have an ethernet card. If it doesn't fit, it's a modem. It is IMPOSSIBLE to fit an ethernet cable into a modem so there is no way to confuse the two. DO NOT try this test with a telephone cable; it will fit into the ethernet card. It will be loose, but it will fit, so don't use it. ONLY use the ethernet cable.

You can also just look in the device manager; if it lists a modem and no ethernet card, well, then it's a modem. If it lists an ethernet card, and no modem.... you get the idea. Ethernet cards will be listed under "Network Adapters" and modems have their own heading called "Modems". If it lists both, then you'll have to determine which method of internet access you'll be using (either dial-up or DSL/broadband/hi-speed) and use the appropriate device. Again, use an ethernet cable to determine which device is which on the back of the PC.

(If I'm not mistaken, we've gone through this before in a very lengthy thread about not being able to connect to the web. Towards the end, it was determined that the OP was trying to use dialup via an ethernet card and wasn't taking advice offered. But I may be mistaken)

don't waste everyone's time reposting Belarc.

    In post #38 you said,

So why are we back to is it a modem or an ethernet card?

I knew this seemed familiar. This will be my last post on this thread. The previous thread (linked to above by plodr) was nightmarish and dragged on forever, essentially getting nowhere due to the refusal of some parties to pay attention.... I'm out.
