    I was asked to look at a PC and I ran through the READ ME (logs attached). It's a Dell WinXP machine (2.80 GHz - 1GB Ram). Combofix has 2 logs due to the rootkit it found and got rid of. However, it said to run it again, so I'm posting both logs. Even after all of the scans, the PC fan seems to start spinning like crazy on its own every now and again. I noticed that svchost is running at 95%+ without me doing anything. Please let me know if there is something that was missed.

    Thanks,
    -Chris

    Rest of logs.

    NOTE: I didn't so anything with the System Restore as of yet since the instruction say not to until I feel everything is OK.

    Are you able to surf the web? One of your logs shows that DHCP is not running.

    It is also a bad idea to allow all users to have Admin. privileges.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    ClearJavaCache::
    KILLALL::

    File::
    c:\docume~1\Tim\LOCALS~1\Temp\oflpydin.sys
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\dldt.log
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\5FB467B04C.sys

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Note: If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

    Now download the latest version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one. Run the exe and attach the new log.

    Then attach the below log:

    • C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Right now, I still get a SVCHOST.exe that runs just about immediately after reboot or power on. It take up over 90% of the CPU for a while and then ot goes back down for a while before doing it again. I've attached the logs. Hopefully, you can tell me what might be causing this problem.

    Go to the control panel / Admin. Tools / Computer management / disc management and tell me if you recognize this partition:
    Partition Disk #0, Partition #2
    Partition Size 4.64 GB (4,984,519,680 bytes)

    In the meantime, use windows explorer to find and delete:
    c:\documents and settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Conduit
    c:\documents and settings\Kirsten\Application Data\Ewte
    c:\documents and settings\Kirsten\Application Data\Muki

    Only disks that are showing are the 2 CD-Rom drives. That's odd.

    As for the folders you wanted me to delete....they are gone.

    What issues are you having and what happens if you go into task manager and stop that svchost service?

    It just seems very odd that the CPU fans starts spinning like crazy for no reason. All I did was turn it on and log in. When I End the SVCHOST.exe process, the fan goes back to normal and about 5 minutes later, it starts up again. And the size of the SVCHOST process keeps growing. Seems like there is something in the background making it do that. Was there something I missed with all the scans?

    The PC has been on for about 5 minutes and now the fan is going nuts and the SVCHOST is running at 99% and the size is over 500,000K.

    This does not sound like a malware problem. I suggest you post in either the software or hardware forum for additional assistance. Your system may be overheating for some reason.

    However:
    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.

    Code:
    ClearJavaCache::
    KILLALL::
    Driver::
    oflpydin
    File::
    c:\docume~1\Tim\LOCALS~1\Temp\[B][COLOR=Red][COLOR=Black]oflpydin.sys[/COLOR]

    [/COLOR][/B][COLOR=Red][COLOR=Black]
    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below log:

    • C:\MGlogs.zip

    Since it was nice out today, I decided to open this thing up and blow it out. I also reseated the CPU and cooler and put on some new thermal grease. I ran the combofix and posted the log. I'm going to see if I have that problem and more. Let me know if the log shoes anything odd.

    Thanks,
    Chris

    Please download a fresh copy of ComboFix to your desktop and re-run my last fix.

    OK, my dumba$$ closed the log before I saved it. Is there a place it gets saved? Or, do I need to run it again? Sorry about that.

    It gets saved at c:\ComboFix.txt

    Awesome. Thanks. Here it is. I haven't heard the CPU fan go crazy in a while now. I'm hoping this PC is good to go. Let me know what the log says.

    Thanks again,
    Chris

    OK, PC seems to be running a little quicker. FF didn't take forever to open. Granted the PC only has 512MB in it now, but the owner is going to upgrade to 3GB.

    Here are the logs. Let me know how it looks.

    Thanks,
    Chris

    Yes TDSSKiller found a nasty rootkit: Rootkit.Boot.Pihar.b

    There is still a component of this infection that we need to make sure is gone.

    Code:
    01:42:55.0640 1444    \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System ) - skipped by user
    01:42:55.0640 1444    \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System ) - User select action: Skip
    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/3557/tdsskiller.gif Re-scan with TDSSKiller with the parameters you used before.
    This time if TDSS File System appears, delete it!
    Leave all the other detections alone (Skip)!
    Then attach the latest TDSSKiller log. (How to attach)

    OK, re-ran TDSS and deleted the problem. It didn't ask me to reboot, so I didn't. Latest log is attached.

    Thanks,

    Good to know.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Malware removal from a National Chain = $149
    Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0
