My Dell XPS13 has been running pretty slow for awhile with stuttering being a big problem, sometimes so bad its unusable. I was just on the phone with Dell support, they logged into my laptop and did a scan. To which they have found many problems, a lot of 'fishing' and 'spam' issues. The techie reckons they can fix it for USD$200 which will include updating the drivers and removing damaging files. Here is a screenshot of it.

Could I save myself USD$200 by buying a stand alone copy of Windows and doing a clean install from scratch?
Would a program like malwarebytes do the fix?
Will I be able to find all the necessary drivers if I choose to do this?

I've asked the tech guy to call me back in 30 minutes for my decision.

You don't need to pay anyone to install and run a program that is available for free!! And purchasing a disk for Windows 10 pro would still cost you around $100. See the below link and you will see that the Advanced WindowsCare Personal program is freeware.

And actually, in the malware removal forum, we strongly recommend against using programs like this as they have sometimes caused more harm then good. Especially registry cleaning which you almost never need and most of what is typically found are not issues anyway.

Updating drivers is something you could easily do yourself and only when necessary to avoid causing yourself unwanted issues.

We can check your PC ( for free ) for malware and other issues and help you clean it ( again for free ) if you wish to see if this is the cause of your problems. If you want to do this then follow the instructions in the below.

Read & Run Me First Malware Removal Guide

If you don't want to run the full malware cleaning process and just want to quickly remove some junk and temporary files then just run CCleaner as shown in Step 5: Temp File/Folder Cleaning ( notice it states only clean temp files and do not clean the registry ) and then run the below to do some addition junk cleaning.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.

Excellent! Thanks for your assistance. I'm going to do the complete "Read and Run..." process and get back when finished.

You're welcome. Just attach your logs to this thread when you are finished.

Here are all the files from the process as instructed. I am still having the problem though not as regularly. The problem being that the pointer is jittery/stutters eg, when i move the mouse pointer from one side of the screen to the other it doesn't show as moving in a smooth motion but rather stops then suddenly appears somewhere else on the screen. This usually happens when a new program is opened (eg, MS Word, Excel, Chrome or Firefox) and can occur occasionally when a new tab is opened in a browser.

No log is attached for TDSSKiller as it is empty and 0 threat was detected. Also, Malwarebyte found no threats as I bought it back in December 2015 and did a scan then, it found a whole bunch of problems that were fixed (deleted) then. The initial file is attached named "malwarebytes_bw20151230.txt"

Looking forward to a reply. Thank you for assisting!

You said TDSSkiller was empty. What is the below then?

I will look thru your logs in more detail tonight but it does not look like you are having malware problems.

If you boot in Safe Boot mode do you have the same problem?
If you run in normal boot mode but with Avast disabled or completely uninstalled do you have a problem?

Were you trying to upload the file that I listed or something else. The one above is 274,874 bytes and is definitely not empty.

Have you tested the other things I suggested because your problem is not due to malware.

This is the error I'm getting ev en though the file is showing as 269k file size.

At the moment, the problem has not occurred while I've been on the laptop for the last 20 minutes. When it does happen I will try your suggestions and report back.

Interesting. If you double click on the file, does it open up in notepad? We probably don't need this log anyway since all your other logs do not show any malware problems but I'm just trying to debug why you are getting this error message which normally only occurs if the file is 0 bytes in size.

Yes it does open which is the strange. Must have been something wrong with that file. This one is a copy/paste and saved as "tdsskiller_bw20160109".

I use uTorrent for downloading/uploading. One thing I've noticed since having malwarebytes running in the background

I get this pop up quite often. Is this suspect?

Also no malware issues are show.
That IP address has been associated with spammers and other malicious activity which is why you are getting that warning from Malwarebytes. If you believe it is safe you can add it to the exclusions list at your own risk.
