    Dear Major Geeks,
    I started a new thread due to age on others, and this is my log.
    We have been doing some clean-up on our Dell Dimension 8100
    running XP Pro. Please review this log for questionable objects we
    may be missing. My email is [snip]
    Thank you in advance,
    Warmly,

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

    Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

    READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
    Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Thank you Kestrel13!,
    First, I apologize for not following R&R properly. It has been awhile since I have had the need to be on the site (HJT used to be part of the process, I think, and I was jumping ahead too soon). I am a 'former techie', which can be dangerous, but had done a pretty good job of clean-up before posting, no viruses, etc., just needed some removal of old 'stuff', and registry cleaning. Now, following your instructions, the PC is really zippin' around. The only problem we are now experiencing is IE8 not allowing an ActiveX to install that is needed for Windows updates. This issue had been compromised prior to "READ & RUN ME". Assuming (once again dangerous) the cause was a setting we were overlooking, I reinstalled IE8, to no avail. We can't seem to find the fix on the MS site either. Any ideas? We are running through "READ & RUN ME" again to post logs this time, if needed.
    OS:Windows XP Pro/SP3
    Thanks again for your prompt reply!

    Yes attach your logs as it is the only way I can take a look at what's going on. It could be that I send you to another forum to resolve your issue, but at least we could rule out the presence of malware being on your machine.

    Dear Kestrel13!,
    There will be two posts due to the number of logs. I had to go back through the procedure myself, last night. The first pass (done by a family member, who this PC belongs to) was incomplete. I am attaching the previous logs I could find for you to see what was logged from the beginning.
    We still can not get Windows/MS updates because of IE8 not allowing an ActiveX to install. I even tried with the firewall, and antivirus disabled, and took the security settings down to a 'risk' level, but still no luck!
    Thanks again in advance for your help.
    Warmly,
    Teencie

    There's still some work to be done, so let's start.

    Important Notice: A new version of SUPERAntiSpyware is available.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this log later.

    Now we need to use ComboFix (I will also include in my script to remove remnants from PCTools)
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    NetSvc::
    ffujbvv

    Driver::
    ffujbvv
    TfFsMon
    TfSysMon
    pctfw2
    pctmp
    pctssipc

    {ABBD5028-5A95-4B6D-996E-98D64AE88D52}

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\rxlmnu.dll
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\TfFsMon.sys
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\TfSysMon.sys
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\pctfw2.sys

    c:\documents and settings\Tina\Local Settings\Application Data\FileTask

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Services\ffujbvv]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this, also attach the new SAS log.

    You must install some anti virus soon, but not just yet, let me check new logs and then you can do so once I have reviewed them.

    Let me know how things are running!

    Dear Kestrel13!,
    Here are the new logs. There are two for MGTools due to running it from the desktop (.exe) 1st, and from the GetLogs.bat file 2nd, if that makes any difference.
    Thanks again!
    Warmly,

    You needn't have ran it twice, but MGTools.exe should be directly in the root folder of your Windows Boot drive (usually this would mean saved here C:\ ) You can delete MGTools.exe from the desktop now.

    Use windows explorer to find and delete the below bold folders:
    • c:\windows\CD95F661A5C444F5A6AAECDD91C240BD.TMP
    • c:\program files\WI508F~1 (or it could appear as c:\program files\WindowsUpdate)

    Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

    Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
    to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    So how is it now?

    You also really need to install some anti virus at this point!

    You didn't tell me how things are running.

    Dear Kestrel13!,

    I apologize for such a delay. I was away from home longer than expected, then became ill with some 'nasty' bug.
    All instructions are completed. The IE8 fix for updates said "successful", but it still does not work. Although, on a positive note, the system seems to be running well! I know that I do need to get the RAM upgraded to 1 Gig for better performance.
    1. Any other ideas on how to fix the 'Windows Updates being blocked due to the ActiveX not installing' problem?
    2. What is your advice on a 'free' security suite?
    This PC belongs to a senior family member who is on a fixed income. I had "Cyber Defender Internet Security" (I think the 2008 free version) on it for him, and he is familiar with it. "SAS" removed most of it, and I deleted the other fragments that were found in a search. The newest version seems to rate well compared to some others.

    Thanks for the support!

    Hi there. Sorry to hear you've been unwell, I too got the dreaded lurgy, been coughing and sneezing for a week. You can further discuss anything else in the saftware forum, and as all seems well from what you said, you can follow final steps. :)

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
      related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
