Possible virus corrupting system files repeatedly

    Hi,

The basic problem I've got is that my system files keep getting corrupted. I thought I'd fixed it but then a week later it cropped back up. Here are my system specs as the problem started (I added another hard drive while trying to fix it)

    Intel Q6600 2.4ghz quad core
    2x2gb OCZ PC6400 RAM
    ATI HD5770 gfx card
    Thermaltake 750w PSU
    1 x 250GB HDD (System files, programs)
1 x 1TB HDD (Music, documents, photos, films, edited video)
    Windows 7 64bit

First off, noticed my computer running a bit slowly but thought nothing of it at the time. Started my computer up the next day and got a load of balloon notifications saying that system files were corrupted, I couldn't do anything so restarted and planned to do a chkdsk. On restart, the startup repair came up and couldn't fix the problem and neither could anything else I tried. Eventually I reinstalled windows on the 250gb hdd with the 1tb hdd detached (I didn't want to wipe it but also didn't want the virus to copy back over if it was on there). After reinstalling, I installed AVG and ran a virus scan, which found nothing. So I rebooted in safe mode and used Bitdefenders online scanner which found 'troj_generic.pln' and 'troj_dropper.pln', I removed these and also ran Trends online scanner which found nothing.

I'd initially thought that the problem was hardware related so I'd ordered a new 2TB hdd which arrived later on that week. So I reinstalled everything again with the following set-up:

1TB - Main (system files, programs, music, documents, photos)
2TB - Secondary (film, edited video)
    250GB -Backup

Also started using Avira anti-virus and Comodo firewall (previously been using AVG and windows firewall). Found no viruses. Yesterday (about one week later) I got exactly the same problem. I've tried startup repair again and it says it can't fix the problem; in the problem details it says "Corruptvolume". Also tried sfc which finds no problems and the same with chkdsk. Installed windows onto the backup drive and tried copying over the system files from that onto the main drive but I got problems with system files being in use. So, I tried to restart into safe mode and now get a BSOD when trying to use the backup drive whereas the main drive still gets the startup repair.

I'm now at a loss of what to do; if I reinstall windows what's to stop the problem coming back and I really don't want to have to format all the drives, I can't face losing all the photos and music.

I can think of two possible problems:
    - A virus which seems most likely. I just don't know how to get rid of it considering it's not coming up in virus scans.

    - Hardware issue - I bought the ATI gfx card in March and have been having POST problems; the computer now takes a long time to POST on startup and sometimes doesn't at all; in those instances I have to turn the computer off using the button and try again - wondering if that could be affecting the drives. I don't know the cause of this problem but I'm pretty sure it's not power; I ran a 8800gtx before and that was much more power hungry than this is supposed to be.

Sorry this is such a long post, tried to keep it down to a minimum.

Thanks for any help you can give!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Hi,

Since I can't actually get onto my main windows install I reinstalled Windows onto the backup disk and did what I could of the Malware Removal Guide but obviously most of it wasn't relevant since this wasn't the install that had the problem.

I ran the programs that were on the list (3 that could be on run on 64 bit) and included the log files. I've told it to scan all of the hard drives where possible but couldn't do that for MGtools.

Also, startup repair still not working and can't get into the install.

I'm going to try reinstalling Windows again on my main partition and then run those scanners again. I'll post if it seems to fix the problem but if not then I'll wait and see what you say; don't want to BUMP the post.

Yes do try that and run scans in normal mode where possible, please. :)
