Problems after cleaning

Hi. I have a Dell Vostro 1000 Win XP laptop here that I have cleaned from Vundo/Variant, Vundo/Variant-Slider, Trojan.Dropper n.exn and Trojan Dowloader HTML:RENOS. I've used MBAM, SAS, GMER, HJT, ESET online scanner, Symantec Vundo Removal Tool. This thing is clean now, I'm pretty sure of that. But my problem is this: there are 2 user accounts - 1 admin rights and 1 limited rights. Everything I did was in the admin account. But now, when I go into the limited account, I have 2 error windows that popup; both referring to dll files that can't be found (of course, I believe these are leftover errors from the viruses being removed)

    FAHAPERA.DLL and RERIPAGA.DLL

IE7 was having difficulty updating security files in WU which could not be resolved due to corrupted files, so I installed IE8 and that works fine now.

I also had to remove the high and low settings in the registry and then reinstall the CD/DVD because XP would not write to CDs.

Everything seems to be working fine now, except for these 2 errors I get in the limited user account. Can you help me please? I am attaching a copy of the errors. Thanks.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Hi. I have followed all the instructions - everything appeared to come up clean. I am still having some issues though, which have appeared now:

    1. When typing, many times, it takes forever for the characters to catch up with me - tremendous lag - although it seems to be a bit better than it was.

    2. When shutting down, it seems I have to do it twice, and then I get a few programs that won't end: explorer.exe & HiddenFaxWindow. They hang and I have to click "END NOW", and then the computer shuts down.

    3. MS Security Essentials is not being recognized by the Windows Security Center - it says I have no anti-virus on the system. I installed this after the cleaning.

I made notes as I followed the instructions:
Antivirus: MS Security Essentials (which, btw, the security center is not recognizing)
    Firewall: Windows Firewall
No Viewpoint anything on the system
    I have only JAVA 6 Update 18
All other antivirus programs have been uninstalled using their uninstallers to be sure they are completely gone, with no remnants lurking around
I have already run Ccleaner several times before posting here…(no idea what the default settings were)…sorry
Hidden & system files are viewable
None of the Malware listed on your site is on this computer.
    Malwarebyte’s found nothing (attached)
SAS found nothing but cookies (this I will attached in a second message, since I am at 4 attachments)

    Thank you for your help.

    1. Before we continue I would like for you to ensure that MGTools.exe is indeed directly on the root folder of the C drive. ---> C:\MGTools.exe. and not in the below location where you have it:
    2. Could you please get this: SecuritySuite.dat into a zipped file and attach it for me in your next post? To do this, see the below:

Please go to start > Run and paste in the following:
    log retrievable @ C:\collect.zip

    3. Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    4. Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    DirLook::
    C:\MDT
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\{755AC846-7372-4AC8-8550-C52491DAA8BD}

    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\REN9F.tmp

    Folder::
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\femigegi
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\reripaga
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\wazemuha

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    5. Also delete all files in the below bold folder except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

    6. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix.

    7. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    8. Is MSSE being detected in the Security Centre now?

Hi. You are right - I put MGTools on the desktop. I deleted it and put it in C:\ where it should be. I re-ran it and attached the MGlog-1.zip here.

The RUN command for getting securitysuite.zip didn't work. I finally moved the file to C:\ and did RUN>CMD and got it that way (see jpeg attached).

Did the "fix" for the 2 items in HJT; ran ComboFix; nothing was in the Temp folder except 4 files from today. Everything is attached here except the new MGlog, which I will upload with a second response.

After doing all this, I must say the typing is a little faster (not quite so much lag, but still some), and the HiddenFaxWindow that would hang on shutdown is gone. But I still have to tell the computer to shut down twice before it actually shuts down, and still, explorer.exe hangs and I have to "END NOW" every time.

MSSE was stil not recognized (it says antivirus not installed), but the program shows as "protected", so I rebooted just to see if that would do it, but no luck.

I did a switch user and logged into the limited user account, to find the two errors still there: reripaga.dll & fahapera.dll; and upon logging out, explorer.exe and Connections Tray hung (is that the Dell Wireless Utility?).

I find 2 WUs waiting now - KB979306 for daylight savings time fix and KB976662 for IE8 JSON comp. w/ECMA Script. I have not installed them yet.

So, some progress, yes. I will put the new MG log in the next message.

Just a quick update: after I posted the previous message, I shut the laptop down (2x), only to find the HiddenFaxWindow hung again, along with explorer.exe.... :-(

Yes you will have to run all the scans on the user account you are referring to as well. Once you have done this, be SURE to clearly label the logs with the name of the different user account to the one we are working on here and attach the logs.

I have to go to bed soon, i'm very tired, but I can continue working on this tomorrow. You run the scans, attach logs, and I'll give a fix in the morning.

Okay, I have made some logs here in the other user account, where the typing lag is very bad. Everything is named beginning with "Mel". I will post the SAS log when it finishes.

I went into Services and changed the fax service from automatic to manual, hoping this may resolve the HiddenFaxWindow hang I get on closing...we shall see...

Please let me know if I am missing anything besides SAS.
    Thanks!

Okay! So here is the SAS - only 14 cookies. But IE kept locking up in that user account and I could not get out of it at all - had to use the power button - and the typing lag after reboot is unbelievable. :(

    For the "Mom" Account!

The file I asked you to zip up is benign and from zone alarm, I just wanted to be sure of this and be thorough.

What do you know about the following files inside of this folder?

Use windows explorer to find and delete the below bold file:

    Now run this:

Running HostXpert to Reset Default Hosts File

Navigate to the c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data folder and ensure that the wazemuha file is gone. Let me know!

    __________________________________

    Fix for the "Mel" Account!

Not seeing much to do: Combofix removed traces of what I had already removed on the other account.

Please also attach the log(s) from MBAM that you ran on this account.

If you do not use Windows Messenger Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Also delete all files in the below folder except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

Is this still occuring now on either account? If not then it will be time to run final steps, but before doing so, I would like for you to uninstall MSSE > reboot the machine > run Ccleaner (not the registry section) and then reinstall it. Let me know how things are running now.

Don't forget to attach the log from MBAM anyway.

I haven't a clue about those files LOL
Deleted wazemuha, ran the hosts fix, logged into Mel's account and voila! no errors for fahapera or reripaga!! awesome!

Diasbled Messenger for all accounts. Removed files form C:\Documents and Settings\Melanie\Local Settings\temp. Am attaching the log from a full scan of MBAM.

I will uninstall and reinstall MSSE later on today and report on the results.
    Thank you.

    Let me know about MSSE.

Deleted that folder & files; uninstalled and reinstalled MSEE, but it still is not recognised by the security center. And also, trying to reboot still takes two tries...and, not only did explorer.exe hang on shutdown (as usual), but the HiddenFaxWindow showed as hanging again too! grrr.....I had hoped disabling the fax service would have resolved that little problem. :(

Kestrel13! I am sorry - I think maybe I didn't run ccleaner after removing MSEE (I can't remember) - I may have to do that again...maybe that is my problem.

OK, I want you to run one final scan before I end up wrapping up here in this forum and sending you to software. I still believe you are malware free, but let's see if something isn't hiding.

GMER - running with a random name

Attach the log to your next message.

Don't worry about that. Complete the gmer scan :) Let's see what gives... if anything.

Well, I went ahead and ununstalled MSSE, rebooted, ran ccleaner, rebooted, reinstalled MSSE and still no luck. I ran GMER and am attaching the log. Thanks.

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -v

    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply.

Here is the log. I believe it said nothing to delete. I think what you saw in the previous log was the backups of the registry changes I had made when running ccleaner.
    Thanks.

Hit up the software forum for advice regarding MSSE. :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
