I am not sure this is a malware issue, but I am having alot of problems with MSI and Windows Live Messenger. Whenever messenger starts up, it tells me that there is a new version to download and would I like to install it. If I click no, messenger does not load, if I click yes, it downloads and then gets to about 1% on the install and freezes. So when I tried to do a manual uninstall, it brought up a Windows Install box that said "Preparing to uninstall..." for about 20 minutes before it gives me an error message saying "Install server not responding"

    Can someone help me!!!

Below is my HijackThis log file

Edit by chaslang: Inline log removed!

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

I'm not sure if the problem you are mentioning is due to malware or not, but you do have malware problems. You must follow the directions below. Please do not post any logs inline with messages and HijackThis logs are only accepted after the below procedures have been followed.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
      • Bitdefender
      • Panda Scan
      • HijackThis
    .

I tried running a panda scan, but windows installer freezes up every time I try to use it, so I can't install the panda software.

What about Bitdefender? Did it run okay and did you save a log? If so, just continuing on and then attach the Bitdefender log and you HJT log from step 7.

If Bitdefender did not run, then run the below procedure and attach the Ewido log:

    Running Ewido Anti-Malware

And then get a HijackThis log and attach it (make sure you ran Ewido before getting the log).

After I download Ewido, a box called Windows Installer pops up and sits there for twenty-thirty minutes saying "Preparing to install..." before popping up a message that says "Install Server error" Retry or Abort. This is the heart of my problem!! I can't install any new programs, and I am getting sketchy performance, with this Windows Installer box popping up frequently when opening known good programs like Microsft Word 2003, which I FULLY installed onto the computer when I got it. Someone PLEASE help me. This is interfering with my work!!!

I have run all of the malware programs. The ones that run (Adaware, Spybot, CCleaner, Windows Defender) tell me there is not infection. Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Tool, however, gets to a file name 1777a.msi and freezes up.

Okay let's do a few things that require no installs.

Attach a new HJT log to your next message.

Now run the below procedure and attach the runkeys.txt log.
Now run the below procedure and attach the newfiles.txt log.

Please install HijackThis properly per step 7 of the READ ME. You should at least be able to do this. You have it here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Derek Mitchell\Desktop\HijackThis.exe

That is exactly where we request that you not install it. Fix this NOW before continuing.

Also you appear to have MSconfig being used to perform some kind of selective startup. You MUST use Normal Startup from MSconfig. This is also mentioned in step 7.

You appear to be running Prevx1 to help protect you. Is this a paid version of free version. If free, uninstall it now.

Now run this SpywareQuake & SpyFalcon Removal Procedure and then attach the requested smitfiles.txt log.

Now make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchURL = prosearching.com
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchURL = prosearching.com
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = prosearching.com

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: Internet Settings - C:\WINDOWS\
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winuoj32 - winuoj32.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Derek Mitchell\My Documents\?racle\msconfig.exe

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST).

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.
Also attach a new runkeys.txt log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.
