I have just gotten myself a virus thru downloading a torrent. It has changed my laptop so when i try and open most programs, they all go to windows media player. I already have superantispyware, malwarebytes' anti-malware, and ccleaner from using ur read and run me forum a while ago to get rid of some malware, but all those programs are infected as well. I tried to download new ones, but they just do the same thing. Any suggestions?

    Thx,
    Mike

Download the latest version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one. Assuming you have an older version still on your system.

Attach that log. Also did you try running a new version of ComboFix? Neither of these programs will require installation.

hey thanx Tim for the advice. I'm not too sure what u mean by my root folder? as u can tell im not big into computers! anyways i tried to save all the programs recommended in read n run me first on a memory stick from another computer and run them on my laptop, but same thing happens. They all go to windows media player! It seems any programs i have already or try to download from the internet do this, except firefox and internet explorer. the internet works fine, my laptop hasn't slowed down at all. not sure if thers any other info i can give ya. any more help would be greatly appreciated.

    MGTools should be put here:
C:\MGTools.exe --> it requires no installation. Just double click the exe.

ComboFix should be placed on your desktop. It also requires no installation and should just run by double clicking it.

You can rename SAS and MBAM as suggested in the R&R....or change the extention from .exe to .com.

You can also try running them in safe mode.

    Did you check this:
If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First. If TDSSserv is not found, just continue on with the READ & RUN ME.
TDSSserv Non-Plug & Play Driver Disable

Please do not start multiple threads!

K......I was able to run MGtools by changing the name. I have attached its log.
No luck doin the same with any of the other programs. When i try to run ComboFix, i click on the link and a box opens up sayn "You have chosen to run Combofix.exe which is a: windows media player From: (link) Save or Cancel". There is no Run option. When I try n save it to my desktop, or anywhere, it goes to windows media player when i try n open it. Havent had a chance to try in safe mode yet. By the way, how do i do that? Also havent had a chance to try that other route u suggested.

You are running Vista with only 1 gig of ram....barely enough.

You need to completely clean out these two folders:
    C:\Windows\Temp\
    C:\Users\mr. cool\AppData\Local\Temp\

This does not appear to be a malware issue, but we can try stopping media player from running:

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Tell me if that helps.
