I am using Windows XP SP3. After logging windows, desktop opens but after clicking any program, computer hangs. Also when I right click for refreshing , it hangs. Quick launch items also have disappeared.
I have scanned my computer for any virus in safe mode and its showing secured.

    Please help guys.

Does the computer hang in safe mode too? Because you were able to run AV program in safe mode, I'm going to assume that the OS is not hanging in safe mode, probably because most of your autorun apps don't start up in safe mode, and it does indeed sound like your problem stems from something incompatible running in your autorun list. Here's a link to a program that lists all of your autorun apps, drivers, services.

You're probably going to have to just start disabling items in your autorun list until you find the offending entry. I'd start with the most recently installed apps first and work backwards.

When you say that your quick launch items have "disaapeared" do you mean they don't show up in task manager (right click on taskbar and click "start task manager") process list or do mean that they are running but simply don't show up in the taskbar?

I agree with rustysavage's post and if safe mode and apps work and open ok then you have a startup app, likely 3rd party one and not a Microsoft OS problem that's causing the problem.

Please do list for us your startup apps as too many security applications can cause hangs on opening software.

Thanks rustysavage...I installed autorun program and disabled some newer autorun entries.

I found that the files of Avast AV are creating problem, so I disabled all of them. Now my system is running ok but my Avast AV is not working. Thats fine, I will instal a newer one.

Thanks again..you saved me from formatting my system....:)
