Recycler Virus Problem

    Hello everyone,

A laptop with Windows XP Professional SP2 had the recycler virus amongst other things on it. I ran MalwareBytes as well as a Kaspersky Rescue Boot Disk. This cleared up many of the annoying pop ups and internet browser redirects. However the error message that came up when trying to access the C drive led me to google the message and find a Recycler hidden folder and I learnt about the RECYCLER virus. The message was "Windows cannot find RECYCLER/s-7-0-76-100012312-100030475-100024956-4936.com" or something along those lines.

After several attempts to delete this thing manually (which I can list if people need be) I wasn't really sure if I'd gotten rid of the thing as the RECYCLER folder still existed in C:\RECYCLER. I ran ComboFix (before taking an image backup just in case). This has seemed to get rid of the folder.

I just wondered if anyone can tell me a way of conclusively checking this thing has gone? Is ComboFix known for getting rid of Recycler? Is there any more info that I need to give to help diagnose such as ComboFix logs? Is the RECYCLER folder a normal part of windows Recycle Bin as many claim?

Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this aother user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Thanks TimW.

Here is a comprehensive analysis of the proceedure.

    Step 1
    846 MB RAM

    Step 2
    Anti-Virus is AVG Free 9.0
    Firewall is Windows XP Firewall

    Step 3
    Removed Viewpoint Media Player
Removed all old Java updates leaving just J2SE Runtime Environment Update 11
and Java (TM) 6 Update 13
Run and installed CCleaner successfully log attached.

    Step 4
    32-bit.
    Hidden files already changed.
    Msconfig changed to Normal Startup.

    Step 5
    REMOVED SearchAssist.

I've outlines the following as suspicious as they have low disk usage and I don't recognise the programs or companies associated.

    Media Show 3.0
    QuickSet
    Thats Rights

Quick googleing of these didn't bring up anything malware related.

    Step 6

    1. All downloaded in the correct directories
    2. SAS didn't find anything, log attached.
    MalwareBytes found nothing, log attached.
ComboFix ran without issue, log attached.
RootRepeal found 1 issue, log attached.
    MGTools log attached.
    3. Only problems I'm having is a slow start up which hasn't changed.
I also have the dreaded RECYCLER folder under C:\RECYCLER and I guess the one problem found by RootRepeal is a bit of a concern.
    4. Deleted restore points.

And that's as far as I've got. The error message when clicking on C: from My Computer no longer exists. I guess I was just hoping for someone to confirm this is a malware/virus free computer as its hopefully being put on a work domain and we dont want it infecting the whole network.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post and my logs and many thanks for your help.

    Eggman.

I am not seeing any malware in your logs. You have a number of unnecessary programs running at start up.
    You may wish to use:

    Startup_CPL

What malware issues are you having?

Well initially the PC was redirecting the web browser to incorrect sites and the error message I mentioned in my original post lead me to suspect the machine had the Recycler virus. Since running some software myself and then following your guidlines the only thing that still concerns me is the fact that the folder C:\RECYCLER still exists; all the other symptoms are gone.

If someone can confirm that this folder is normal and that the computer is Recycler virus free then I can put the machine on the domain and all is right with the world. I realise this is quite a specific question so you may not be able to confirm fully.

    Thanks again,

    Eggman.

You once had Norton installed? If so, that is a leftover. Run this:
Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT)then reboot your machine and then run it again for good measure.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
