My son has just had a problem with his Dell laptop. On start up a virus scanner would appear to run and give reports of multiple problems. Also numerous windows update icons would appear in the task bar. When he tried to browse any where it always redirected.

I tried to run the procedure you suggest in the malware removal sticky but nothing worked. I tried again in safe mode and was succesful. It was only then that I was able to update java. I also fixed the browser problem which was caused by something altering the connection to a proxy server.

After fixing this I then ran the suggested programs again in normal mode and those are the logs attached. His laptop is Win 64 so only three logs.

Everything appears to be running fine but Avira is reporting TR/Drop.Agent.chem in ...\MGTools.exe.

    Hello, Onesize

Please re-boot your machine into "Normal Startup Mode" as requested in the R & R

Please attach this log from a previous run of Malwarebytes
This file doesn't belong on your desktop -- move it elsewhere!
    C:\Users\Jack\Desktop\X12-30062.exe

    Step 1:
Run the below tool > re-boot > run it a second time.
McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool 3.5.109.1

    Step 2:
Please look in Add/Remove Programs for the following and uninstall if found. If you get any errors just make a note and continue on.
    Step 3:
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    Step 4:
Now follow these instructions to remove your proxy settings:
    Proxy Server - Changing Settings

If you have a router hooked up then you need to follow the instructions for your hardware and reset it to factory default settings. {Normally there is a recessed push button type switch that needs to be held down for some number of seconds to do this.} After resetting to factory defaults on your router, you will need to reconfigure the router for your network if you have made any changes to the default network setup.

    Step 5:
Using Windows Explorer - find and delete this file:
    C:\Users\Jack\AppData\Local\ckuohljjs

Delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    Step 6:
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

    Step 7:
Now install the latest Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Step 8:
Now go to this link MGTools and download the new version of MGtools....overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip and the mentioned mbam-log.txt files to your next reply.

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure; and answer this - "What malware problems are you still experiencing?"

    Hi, Thanks for the replies.

I wondered if the report from Avira was a bug, but it did not occur when downloading or running MGTools. The report occued randomly after all procedures were run.

I carried out the other steps you suggested. I'd already upgraded Java but may have done this out of sequence after having problems in safe mode. The only version of Java in Add/Remove is Java 6 update 20.

Regarding the proxy server issue I'd already unchecked the proxy server in connections. I'm reluctant to do anything to the router but if it is necessary I'll change the settings. I had problems when I first had this setting and it now does not use the usual wireless channel. My sons laptop, the one with the virus, connects wirelessly.

I deleted ckuohljjs but it was an empty folder not a file.

I've attached the logs you you request.

    Si

You'll have to uninstall update 20 because the latest version is Sun Java Runtime Environment 6 Update 21

Had I had the mbam-log-2010-07-06(22-52-13).txt before I requested it, it would have been shown as a malware folder:
    Files Infected:
    C:\Users\Jack\AppData\Local\ckuohljjs\oeamfoytssd.exe (Trojan.Downloader) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

    Our tools showed:
    Code:
Locating all files created in C:\Users\Jack\AppData\Local\ within the last 90 days.

    d-----w [b]0[/b] 2010-07-02 09:18:17 C:\Users\Jack\AppData\Local\ckuohljjs
The highlighted 0 is file size = 0 bytes... thus indicating a file.

*Since you didn't answer "What malware problems are you still experiencing?", I take it that all is well with the machine.

It is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and re-enable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have re-enabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Thanks Dr M

I'll do as you say, and no, to answer the question I missed, the machine is no longer causing any problems. I'll also suggest to my son he is more cautious about where gets his music files from.

BTW How do you get to know all this stuff? What to look for in the logs, etc.

    Si
