Rootkit ZeroAccess problem

Seems like this is quite an insidious piece of malware.

The computer is actually working ok right now. It had been hit by the fake Windows Antivirus 2012 bug, but I was able to remove that and clean up some other issues this user had.

But - every time I run ComboFix, it tells me the ZeroAccess rootkit is there (attached error message graphic) attached to the tcp/ip stack and it reboots to remove it, etc. but it's still there the next time I run it. I want to be able to put this computer back at the user's desk without thinking the rootkit is still there.

I've most recently followed through the steps and run:
    Super Anti-spyware
    MB Anti-Malware
    Combo-fix
    RootRepeal
    MGTools

I'll be attaching those logs to this message... as well as the Combo-fix error message

Hopefully I'm just missing another step or two. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Not sure what else you need about the computer/OS/etc.

I'm the IT director for our small company.... usually don't have much trouble removing malware, but this one has me stumped.

    Thanks!!

Hi and welcome to Major Geeks, debidaugherty!

http://img853.imageshack.us/img853/6741/addremovexp.gif From Add/Remove Programs (via Control Panel), please uninstall the below:
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 30
MGtools should have been run from the root of C:

Make sure that ComboFix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your desktop -- but do not run it.
If it is not on your desktop, the below will not work.
Shut down your protection software now (antivirus, antispyware...etc) to avoid possible conflicts.
Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into Notepad:

Save this file as CFScript.txt to your desktop. So now you should have both CFScript.txt and ComboFix.txt on your desktop.
Now use your mouse to drag CFScript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe and then release.

    This will launch ComboFix.
Note: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Allow ComboFix to update itself if prompted.
When ComboFix finishes, a log will be produced at C:\ComboFix.txt
Attach this log to your next message. (How to attach)

Put your computer back into Normal Startup Mode and reboot before proceeding to the next step. See >> Use MSconfig to setup for Normal Startup Mode

http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/3557/tdsskiller.gif I want you to read and follow these instructions: TDSSKiller - How to run

http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/6703/generalxpicon.gif Please download MBRCheck by clicking here and save it to your desktop.

    • Double-click on the file to run it. (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
    • A window will open on your desktop.
    • If an unknown bootcode is found you will have further options available to you, at this time press N then press Enter twice.
    • If nothing unusual is found just press Enter.
    • A .txt file named MBRCheck_mm.dd.yy_hh.mm.txt should appear on your desktop.
    • Attach this file to your next message. (How to attach)

http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/9049/javaz.gif Now install the current version of Sun Java from: jre-7u2-windows-i586.exe

    http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/945/baticonxp.gif Now run C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat by double-clicking it.
This updates all of the logs inside MGlogs.zip.
When it is finished, attach C:\MGlogs.zip to your next message. (How to attach)

Let me know how the PC is running after you have completed these steps.

I'll definitely do this first thing tomorrow morning. Had to work in a different office today but looking forward to this process. (Not going to let the critters win!)

Odd that the Java website didn't give me the most updated Java download, though... that was actually one set of steps I did do yesterday before the final run of those scans. They're still pushing the version 6 on their website.

Sure hope this removes the rootkit... actually the computer seemingly works fine right now - only ComboFix continues to advise me that the rootkit is still there. Nothing else was notifying me about it at all.

Thanks, in advance, for your help. I'll let you know how things go tomorrow!

I'm thrilled.... everything worked flawlessly.... and my final ComboFix run did not give me any alerts that the rootkit was still there!!!

    Thank you SO much!!!

    You're welcome :)
These latest logs are all clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis if it present
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work through the below link:
Take care and be safe! :)
