My dad's laptop has suddenly gone haywaire. When you ask it to do anything it openes the window, but the window is blank. It won't do System Restore and often starts up in Safe Mode, even with that it won't actually do anything. Tried using Backup CD-ROM, but still no joy.

 

How old is this machine, what model#? Have you done a sfc /scannow in a command window? You can always do a repair with the DVD for the machine. It will not wipe it out, but can cause a roll lback to a previous restore point, so back up anything like documents and pictures first.

 

brownizs, Thanks for your reply. Someone on another forum has suggested doing that, so will have a go today when I am over at my dad's.

Can't back up anything, as you can't get anything to come up except empty windows. Dad has the Restore disks they told him to do when he first got the lappy, but they won't work either.

 

If you can boot up with a Ubuntu Live DVD, that would allow you to access the Windows partition, and pull off any files in his My Documents, into a Pocket drive like this http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olstemp...696261&add_to_pkg=false&pagetype=listing&gf=y I have the 1TB and still have not used but maybe 325gb on it so far, with the stuff I have backed up.

Before you go over there, grab the Malware checking tools in http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=139681 and also print the info out, unless you have a tablet or laptop that you can use at the same time, to allow you to look stuff up while you find problems, etc..

Now of course, the final thing is load up Teamviewer, so that if you do ever run into a issue, not only can you connect with him, but it also allows for video meetings, and file transfer. Any thing that you find, just add to this thread. If it gets to where it needs to escalate up the food chain, then we can move it up that direction.
