    Hello,

I picked up this computer free from someone who was getting rid of it.(Now I know why!) When my son's computer died, I started working on this one to get him a working computer again. I have run the procedures from the Read Me First thread and will now attach the first 4 logs. Thanks for your help!

D'oh! I followed all the procedures very carefully and then forgot to click on the "Upload" button!

    I'll try again.

    Thanks,

I want you to run TDSSKiller so refer to the below for how to do so.

    TDSSkiller - How to run

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.

Thanks for the help. The 2 log files are attached.

Also, I am having a problem with sporadic network access. IE is the most consitent, but fails sometimes. When that happens I run WinSocFix and reboot and it comes back for a while. Firefox usually cannot find the internet connection at all. My laptop and other computers on the network have no problem accessing the internet.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    • R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://www.seekerbar.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=50154
    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4EFB-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {65D886A2-7CA7-479B-BB95-14D1EFB7946A} - (no file)

    • O15 - Trusted Zone: *.imageservr.com (HKLM)
    • O15 - Trusted Zone: *.systemdoctor.com (HKLM)
    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix by sUBs

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    Uvdf41
    FireFox::
    FF - ProfilePath - c:\documents and settings\Will\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\qxq4frac.default\
    Trusted Zone: drivecleaner.com
    Trusted Zone: errorprotector.com
    Trusted Zone: imageservr.com
    Trusted Zone: systemdoctor.com
    FF - prefs.js: keyword.URL - hxxp://search.mywebsearch.com/mywebsearch/GGmain.jhtml?id=ZLxdm256YYUS&ptb=Jg18FgpL_MYQ.nqLpt_V6w&ind=2011042422&ptnrS=ZLxdm256YYUS&si=1579&n=77de1276&psa=&st=kwd&searchfor=
    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{02478D38-C3F9-4EFB-9B51-7695ECA05670}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{65D886A2-7CA7-479B-BB95-14D1EFB7946A}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{F2AA9440-6328-4933-B7C9-A6CCDF9CBF6D}]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

Hi, I did the MG tools part without any problem. In cutting and pasting the text I was not sure if I was able to get the whole thing, since I couldn't select text and scroll at the same time, but I think I got it. Combo fix is now running, but the blue screen just says "Scanning for infected files. this typically dowsn't take more than 10 minutes. However, scan times can easily be doubled for badly infected machines." It has been running for 15 minutes and doesn't appear to be doing anything. (HDD light is not lit. The curser just sits there flashing but no new text appears in the blue screen box.)

On the anitvirus, this machine came with an old (2005) antivirus that was not only severely out of date, but the company no longer offers updates for this particular software. I tried to install Norton (supplied by Comcast.) I was able to download the installer but the installer was unable to connect with the internet to complete the installation. Should I attempt to install Norton again after finishing this step?

    Thanks again for your help,

    Dave

Sorry, that should read that in running the ComboFix instructions, I was unsure if I had cut and pasted the text correctly.

After an hour and 10 minutes I shut down the computer and restarted. I ran the ComboFix again, double checking to be sure the CFscript was correct, and so far, same results. It gets to the scan portion and just stays there doing nothing.

Tried twice to run the ComboFix script, with no success either time. I have attached the logfile you requested; not sure if yu want that yet or not, but there it is. Still no internet connection in Firefox.

Ok, I figured out that I could run the ComboFix in safe mode, and I'll attach the new logs here. Still no internet connection In Firefox.

Have to go to work now so won't have time to install Norton yet, but I will plan on doing that this evening if I don't hear any different from you by then.

    Thanks,

    Dave

I was able to download the stand alone installation package for Norton and installed, but Norton is not able to connect to the internet. I have anti virus and firewall installed and running but am not able to register it or update. Still not able to connect through firefox or chrome.

But you can via Internet Explorer? :confused

yes; IE balks sometimes when I first start it, but then after a minute or so will find the connection. Firefox, chrome, Norton cannot make a connection to the internet.

OK, a little bit of new information. Had to move the computer off the kitchen island (wife is coming home today from visiting her mother.) So it's in the man cave and right next to the router. So I took out the wifi card and plugged in the ethernet cable, and now no internet access at all. Went back to the wifi card and still no internet access. Network connections from the control panel shows no network connections of any kind. Find New Hardware says it can find no drivers for my onboard network card. I reinstalled the wifi drivers from the installation CD and still no connections. Now when I reboot I get 2 new error messages. The first one is "The procedure entry point apsApply could not be located in the dynamic link library wlanapi.dll." and after that the second one is similar, "The procedure entry point apsInitialize could not be located in the dynamic link library wlanapi.dll."

I spoke to Thisisu who suspects a hardware problem, so let's do the below.

Reboot the PC before following these next set of instructions:

    http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/3941/minitoolbox.gif Use MiniToolBox again...

    Checkmark following checkboxes:

    • List content of hosts
    • List IP configuration
    • List Winsock Entries
    • List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
    • List Devices -> Only Problems
Press Go and attach the result (Result.txt) that pops up. A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

    Download OTL to your desktop.

    • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
    • Vista and Windows 7 users Right-click OTL and choose Run as Administrator)
    • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
    • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
    • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

Attach both of these logs into your next reply.

When I got this machine it was running Win XP SP1. While I had an internet connection I updated to SP2 and then SP3, so there are a lot of new files on it in the last 30 days. Fair warning. Again, thanks for all your help.

We need to run an OTL Fix

    • Right-click OTL.exe And select " Run as administrator " to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it.
    • Copy and Paste the following code into the textbox. Do not include the word Code

    Code:
    :Processes
    :killallprocesses
    :OTL
CHR - plugin: My Web Search Plugin Stub (Enabled) = C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bin\NPMyWebS.dll
    :files
    C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch
    C:\Program Files\Constant Guard Protection Suite
    C:\Program Files\SFT\GuardedID
    C:\Program Files\Norton Security Suite
    C:\Program Files\McAfee
    C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\APPLICATION DATA\NORTON
    C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\APPLICATION DATA\WHITE SKY, INC
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Viewpoint
    :services
    VETMSGNT
    CAISafe
    :commands
    [EMPTYTEMP]
    [RESETHOSTS]
    [REBOOT]
    • Then click the Run Fix button at the top.
    • OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot. ATTACH that report in your next reply.

    Mini Toolbox reports:

So you should do that and let us know how things are.

Had to run OTL in safe mode. Attaching the report. The device manager does not list ANYTHING when I open it. completely blank.

Is it time to start thinking about wiping the hard drive and reinstalling windows? i do not have the disks that came with the computer, but I do have an authentic full install version of XP Pro that I could use.

    Any change?[/QUOTE]

Yes! I had to try all the procedures outlines, and the last one, the manual register edit, finally worked. I now have a working device manager, and have a working internet connection, including Norton, Chrome, and Firefox.

Anything else that I need to do?

Thanks again for all your help,

Only follow final steps! :) Glad to hear everything is working in perfect order again!!!

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thank you very much! I ran the uninstall procedures, turned system restore back on, rebooted, and everything seems fine. I appreciate all your help!

    Have a good evening.
