    Hello there,

My boss's computer started acting funny, so she asked me to take a look at it since computers are a hobby of mine. I've run the Read & Run Me First section and I'm hoping someone can help me to determine if that means it's clean now? There were errors in trying to run rootrepeal, but I can attach all the other logs.

    The History:
It sent a mass email out to everyone in her address book (hotmail), I advised her to change her password. It redirects on internet searches and address entries in the address bar. She claims it had Firefox on it, until recently when it "disappeared" mysteriously. I can't find any sign of it being installed currently. I was unable to access majorgeeks website because of the redirection problem, so all downloads and installations on her computer were via a jumpdrive transfer from my laptop to her desktop.

Also, on start up it has the persistent problem of 2 error messages (she says it says the same thing when her aircard is plugged in. It too, mysteriously stopped working which is what finally prompted her to ask for my help.) The aircard is not currently installed, and I'm wondering if I need to get that from her to fix these error messages? They are:
    1. airpluscfg.exe - entry point not found (the procedure entry point apsSearchInterface could not be located in the dynamic link library. wlanapi.dll
    2. wzcsldr2.exe - entry point not found (the procedure entry point apsGetReady could not be located in the dynamic link library. wlanapi.dll
Then windows pops up an error box saying "D-Link Wireless LAN Monitor stopped working." This happens on every startup.

When I got her computer it needed tonnes of windows updates, hp updates, java updates and adobe updates. It had no security installed, I'm planning on installing Comodo IS once it's clean. Then I started the Read & Run Me First list. Most of the list went very well. Then I tried to run rootrepeal. It immediately went to blue screen of death with the following lengthy error message:
"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

    IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If this is the first time you’ve seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed, If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced startup options, and then select safe mode.

    Technical information:

    *** STOP: 0x0000000A (0x81FAFD73, 0x000000FF, 0x00000008, 0x81FAFD73)

Collecting data for crash dump …
Initializing disk for crash dump …
    Beginning dump of physical memory.
Dumping physical memory to disk: 100
    Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system admin or technical support group for further assistance."
I then restarted windows, chose to restart in normal mode, and then it seemed fine. I then ran MGtools as the next step in the list. Should I try to run rootrepeal again?

I'm attaching logs, except for rootrepeal which failed. When someone has a second could you please look them over and offer your opinion regarding next steps for me to take? Thank you very much, R.

Let's have you run the below and then you can tell me how things are running afterwards. :)

Important Notice: A new version of SUPERAntiSpyware is available.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this log later.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - MRI_DISABLED - (no file)
    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [VFFJ] rundll32 "C:\Users\Bobbie\AppData\Roaming\nvwssm.dll",EVPCGNT

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\Users\Bobbie\AppData\Roaming\nvwssm.dll
    Registry::
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "VFFJ"=-
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670}\NoExplorer]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{3A4CA0F1-65F3-4226-93FA-578CB5408F1C}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{3A4CA0F1-65F3-4226-93FA-578CB5408F1C}]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

It redirects on internet searches and address entries in the address bar.

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop

    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor.
    • Allow the application to run and a window will open showing that it is TDSSkiller from Kaspersky
    • Click Start scan
    • It will run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some data on it
    • Right click on the screen and select > Select All
    • Press Control+C
    • Open a notepad and press Control+V
    • now please ATTACH that report to this thread

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

Thank you so much for the instructions! I'm attaching logs here. I'll reply again so I can attach the last of them for you.

Also, if this machine is infected, is it possible I've infected the other machines connected to our network (a PS3 and two other laptops)?

How it's doing right now: it doesn't seem to have any more redirection problems. I'm still not sure if it's fully clean yet, I'll trust your judgement on that one.

It still has the problem of the two error messages on startup that I mentioned in the first email. I've asked her for her wireless aircard so I should have it tomorrow to be able to trouble shoot those problems.

Thanks again for all your help, I'll post the other logs in the next reply. R.

Sorry about the delay in a response. I have had computer problems!!

Glad to hear that all is running well.
If you are experiencing any malware like behaviour then by all means run the scans on the other computers but they will need to have seperate threads, this thread has to be wrapped up now.
Any other problems such as the errors you mentioned at start up are not malware related and therefore can be asked about in the software forum. :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thank you so much! After everything we've done, I installed Comodo Internet Security and ran a scan, it said it found 14 more things, mostly games she had installed that were actually adware. Her machine seems to be behaving well now, thanks to you!

I remain in awe of your expertise. Is there a way I could learn how to analyze logs and reports too? I so admire what you do for the community, thank you.
